Tribes return with second album

TRIBES are back with their second album, ‘Wish To Scream’ on May 20th. 

The first single proper to be released will be How The Other Half Live and the band can reveal the video above.
 
‘How The Other Half Live’ is one of two tracks written by Dan White on the album. It compiles his run-ins with police, bouncers, ticket inspectors and other institutionalised bullies into a brash Sreamadelic blues rocker condemning power-hungry authority figures in all their forms.

‘Wish To Scream’ was produced by Kevin Augunas and recorded at the famed Sound City Studio in LA, where Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ and Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ were brought to life and was recently the subject of a documentary by Dave Grohl.
 
Their next run of live dates for the band in the UK will come in two waves – kicking things off regionally from April 6th-12th, followed by a second run the week ‘Wish To Scream’ is released from May 21st. All dates will culminate in the band's biggest London headline show to date at the 3,000 capacity Roundhouse in Camden on May 29th. See full dates below.

Gramme back with new album

PUNK-funk cult group Gramme have unveiled a video for new track Laugh Out Loud following the release of their long-awaited debut album Fascination last week.

It marks a Bowie-esque return for the band after a decade of silence - no gigs, no music, no nothing.

Gramme is the musically pioneering band that went missing in action sometime around 2000. Originally signed to Trevor Jackson's Output label, the band emerged in the mid-nineties with a sound so out of step with the cultural milieu they found themselves swimming against the tide. 

Originally a five piece, the band formed around a shared love of the emotional melancholy now synonymous with Factory artists such as Joy Division, Section 25 and A Certain Ratio. 

The cult around the band and their lone release, the Pre-Release EP - recorded in 1997 and released two years later - continued to grow until in 2011 some mysterious 12" bootlegs of Like U began to appear, with edits by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. 

A few months later self-released white labels begin to circulate with new Gramme material. Those recent EPs have gone on to form Fascination, the first full studio album by Gramme.

Gramme 2012, now a streamlined four piece but equally as passionate and excited by the possibilities of their own music making. 

The album represents about two and a half years of sporadic but intense writing, jamming, recording and editing and at least three complete fresh starts.

Atoms For Peace head to Europe

ATOMS For Peace – the hotly anticipated side project of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke – is set for the European festival circuit.

Playing for the first time in Serbia, the band will spearhead the EXIT R:Evolution.

Joining Yorke will be Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea, long-time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, drummer Joey Waronker of Beck and REM, and percussion virtuoso Mauro Refosco.

The band will be performing tracks from their debut album Amok, which was released on Monday.

EXIT R:Evolution takes place in early July with the band then heading to Germany to headline Melt! 2013.

New single from Jaws

 

FRIEND Like You is the new single from Birmingham four-piece Jaws.

Along with b-side Breeze, the single is included in an accompanying bumper EP release titled Milkshake, which rounds up the band's previous singles and is released on April 22.

Jaws are lined up to play Camp Bestival, Bestival and Beacons festivals this summer.

We are four musicians who have been perfecting our craft from a young age - Scenzi (Drums), Porretta (Lead Singer), Gian (Lead Guitar) and Stevie (Bass).

How Would You Describe Yourselves?

High energy, hard-working and raw.

Who are your main influences musically?

90’s rock and blues-driven guitar.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

As musicians we hope to get our music out to as many ears as possible, while maintaining our identities as musicians. We want to rock as many crowds as possible.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

So far the highlight of our career was a gig that we performed when we were starting out as a band. It was at Tattoo Rock Parlour, in Toronto. We got cut to a 20 minute set due to “bad” promoting and the venue turning into a night club. The place was filled with people who have never heard us and were looking to hear dance music. We got up to do our set and people rushed the stage after hearing the first lick, we tore the roof off the place. It was a highlight because for the first time we had a crowd that had no connection to our music and no reason to support us go insane and freak out over our music.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

When we came together as a band we were coming off a string off hot gigs and the following week we went to do a set in Oshawa, Ontario. When we got there the only people that were there were the bartenders. This is the first time we were ever put in a position to play in front of no one. It really hurt the morale.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

That song would have to be Time Flies. Iit’s high energy, high intensity, but at the same time it has a deep personal meaning behind it.

We are a blue collar rock band. We recorded our new EP Half Empty at Mushroom Studios in Toronto, Canada, with Mathew Von Wagner (producer of USS, Crystal Castles, and The Dunes) Mathew Cody and John Wozniak (lead singer of Marcy Playground / Sex And Candy).

La Roux, Miles Kane join Benicàssim bill

TWENTY new bands have been confirmed for Benicàssim 2013.

La Roux (above), Miles Kane, Everything Everything and Woodkid all join the line up along with the likes of Le Carousel, Childhood, Christian Smith and Chvrches, among others.

They join what is one of the strongest line ups in the Spanish festival's history with The Killers, Queens Of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee Rascal, Jake Bugg and the Hurts already confirmed.

  

FIB 2013 will be held in Benicàssim's concert venue on July 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st.

Debut single from To Be Frank

SINGER, producer and multi-instrumentalist To Be Frank is releasing his debut single on April 1 through Solebay Music.

If You Love Her is a stripped back, uncomplicated piece of music by the Suffolk artist.

“Too many artists are about the story these days, rather than just letting the music talk,” said Frank, who has already seen music success with his own sync company and record label Solebay Music, penning scores for the likes of Harley Davidson, Louis Vuitton, River Island and various television shows and films.

Working with a DIY ethos throughout his career, To Be Frank started working on his sound and honing his own  from a young age, taking influence from some of music’s pioneers such as Aretha Franklin, Aphex Twin, Marvin Gaye and Prince to name a few.

Personal influences came from growing up in an extremely creative family, Frank’s mother and father were both artists who encouraged his interest in music, which seems to run in the family as Franks great-great grandfather was the composer Michel Bergson taught by Chopin and father to the world renowned philosopher and Nobel prize winner Henri Bergson.

Moving forward to the present day and musically Frank enjoys a variety of music from rock to electro, dance to soul and everything in-between. As an artist he doesn’t want to pigeonhole himself and takes pride in his curiosity to always try new things.

Paloma Faith and The Vaccines for Evolution Festival

EVOLUTION Festival returns to the North East of England this May bank holiday with another outstanding line-up featuring the most influential and exciting names in popular music right now.  

Paloma Faith and The Vaccines headline the event at the Quayside, Newcastle/Gateshead, on Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27.

Other acts on the bill include Jake Bugg, Ellie Goulding, Bastille, Rudimental, Aluna George, The Strypes, Sub Focus and Modestep.

 

Tickets for the festival are just £29.50 for the day and £39.50 for the weekend.

Born Ruffians prepare to new album release

BORN Ruffians will be releasing their new album Birthmarks through Yep Roc on April 21.

Birthmarks follows two full length albums and two EPs by the Toronto group through Warp Records.

The band say much of Birthmarks was born on the farm, but some of the songs were conceived long before with many being demoed while touring.

The album was then recorded over the course of a year at Boom Box Studios in their hometown of Toronto.
 
Birthmarks will be released on Yep Roc everywhere outside of Canada, where it’ll be released on their longtime home of Paperbag Records.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Lou: To bring enjoyment to as many lives as possible - the way music has brought enjoyment to my life.

Fab: I want to hold my most coveted GuitarWar titles at the same time. I am currently eight finger tapping champ, but never held sweep picking champ long enough. It’s all fun music making to me :)

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Both: receiving over 13,000 likes in our first week on Facebook. (We formed in Jan 2013 and launched all sites on 4th Feb 2013.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Lou: The day we lost Lynn Upton my momma on Sep 15 2010 - Hearing *In the arms of the angels* at the funeral helped.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why? 

I want to say our upcoming vocal single as it’s a step up in studio quality. But as that’s a few weeks away I'll say A Blazing Shroud.

A gritty British sounding punk unit with a dancey feel, basically a dancier sex pistols, lad music.

The Sex Pistols, Black Rebel Motorcycle club, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, The Stone Roses.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Grow a good enough fan base and get our tunes heard by as many people as possible, id say we want it all but one step at a time has to be the key.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Getting a chance to support The View acoustically in London, because they’re such a popular act and was nice playing to a fair few people, not all the band got to play it, just me (Michael) and guitarist Craig, but they supported us throughout and wished they could of played themselves.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

When we ballsed up a new tune, basically it weren’t tight enough, but we saw its potential so we thought ah go on we'll just play it live. It was only our second gig in front of about 10 people, but still, was comical but we've gotta stay professional if we wanna be taken seriously, shit travels fast.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Just Dreamin Man, it’s got the dance feel mentioned earlier, but a raw sound, feels fresh, but more importantly it has a massive chorus and that’s what we're about, big choruses where the vocal takes a step up.

Beyonce & Kings of Leon for V Festival 2013

BEYONCE and Kings Of Leon have been announced as the two headliners at this year's V Festival.

Jay Z's missus and the Followill boys will be joined on the line up by a mix of pop and indie artists including Stereophonics, The Script, Emeli Sandé, Calvin Harris, Beady Eye, Jessie J, Two Door Cinema Club, The Vaccines and Basement Jaxx.

Home town boy Olly Murs will return once again and will also be joined on the bill by Paloma Faith, James, Rita Ora, The Courteeners, Jason Mraz, FUN., Labrinth, Ellie Goulding, Kendrick Lamar, Of Monsters And Men, Maverick Sabre, Travis, Jessie Ware, Maximo Park, Rudimental, James Arthur, Deacon Blue, Little Mix, Ocean Colour Scene, The Fratellis, Gabrielle Aplin and Laura Mvula.

One of the UK's most commercialised festivals - something it is proud to boast about - takes place over the weekend of August 17 and 18 at Hylands Park, in Chelmsford, Essex, and at Weston Park, in Staffordshire.

So many influences , some of our main influences would be Big Sugar, Jack White, Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. We usually say everything from Bob Dylan to Slipknot and everything in between. 

What do you hope to achieve in music?

We hope to be able to play for our friends and fans all over the world, record a new album within the next year and tour extensively!  

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

So far I think it's been having the opportunity to record "My Stand" with Grammy winner Eric Tingstad, he's an amazing guy , musician and producer ! Also we will be playing My Stand this Feb 27 on National Pink Shirt Day ( Anti Bully Day ) here in Canada for 400+ students ! That will def be a highlight!  

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

We haven't had one yet! We never sweep on the past, you can't change stuff that's already happened, roll with the punches and move on :-) 

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

We have so many different style songs it's hard to choose just one ! "Blacktop Blues" is a really great song and so is "My Stand" I think each song represents us well , we already have a new album ready and it will be the best yet.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Everything. We want everything.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Learning who is real and who is not. It's quite a highlight because it's something that plagues all serious musicians. Unfortunately while operating within a 'band' you must collaborate with others and we are using the word "unfortunately" because unfortunately most musicians are a living representation of the word "fail". Any driven, serious musician will know exactly what we're referring to.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Many instances of losing commitments and dealing with the time oriented setbacks of related to that.

California. It's abrasive, but infectious and fun.

Where are you from?

Devastator.

Who else is in your band?

Darryl Reddy, Dwayne Whalen, Joe Dolomont and Chris Coleman.

How would you describe yourselves?

Just metal, really loud aggressive heavy rock and roll. Not much into the label thing, people can call it whatever they want, but I always just see us as presenting a real dark and aggressive side in our lyrics and music.

Who are your main influences musically?

Slayer, early Metallica, new wave British heavy metal; basically anything that kicks ass from AC/DC to Pantera.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

We want to be a full time touring act so we can bring the madness to the world!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Devastator has had a couple of line ups, my own highlight is playing the Milwaukee Metal Fest 1997 with GWAR, and a bunch of other awesome bands. I would also have to say though not in Devastator, my four years playing in several Detroit metal bands, including opening for Anthrax, SOD, Clutch and a bunch of other killer acts.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

A guitar player I hired for one line up who turned out to be not much more than a pretty boy.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

One More Altar (coming on new cd currently being mastered at FinVoxx Studios by Mika Jussila.) Because it basically tears your face off and contains a bunch of disparate elements that work really well together, just like this line up.
