Bless And Defy Q&A
Ethan Simpson
Where are you from?
McMinnville, Oregon, United States.
Name of band:
We are called Bless and Defy
Who is in your band?
I'm the lead vocalist, I play guitar and I'm the
main song writer. Our other guitarist is named Jacob Baltzell, our bass player
is actually my brother and his name is Lukas Simpson. And last but not least is
our drummer, Kelsey Bleck
How would you describe yourselves?
I would describe myself, personally as the main song
writer in the band. I started writing songs in middle school for a couple bands
that I played guitar for. I joined the the choir program at school
by accident and I found out that I could sing. After going through a couple
bands, I decided to form my own, and I could never succeed at finding all the
people necessary. Finally in my senior year, I found a drummer and bassist, and
a friend of mine to play rhythm guitar and I sang and played lead guitar.
Several line up changes later, I am the only original member of the band but we
are all good friend and we enjoy making music together. this last summer i
financed the recording of our first demo/EP which we have released one single
from the rest of the songs from it, we are expecting to release sometime last
month.
As a band, we are some style of melodic metal. We have
soooooo many influences that is really hard for us to just stick to one style,
we are also a young band so I'm expecting our musical identity to continue to
evolve as time goes on.
Who are your main influences musically?
We have sooo many, I personally started off into
Christian hard rock bands like: Kutless, RED, and Disciple, and eventually I
ended up getting into a lot of metal core bands: Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, Oh Sleeper, Demon Hunter, etc.
I also have gone through phases where I've listened to
bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Creed, Alter Bridge, Stone Sour,
Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera, Disturbed, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, Messugah, Animals As Leaders, Shinedown and of course all the legendary
bands - Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Motorhead.
Lately my favorites have been: Trivium, Dethklok, Bullet
For My Valentine, and all sort of different stuff. And I also have to say the
new Killswitch Engage album with their original frontman back, that album kicks
ass.
What do you hope to achieve in music?
I just want to create music that I enjoy listening to and
that I enjoy playing. Eventually I'd like to get signed and tour around the
world and just have fun playing my music.
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and
why?
We got to play a battle of the bands at a local theater,
called the Hawthorne Theater, a couple weeks back, and I've regularly attended
concerts there and I've seen some of my all time favorite artists play there.
So I was a huge honor to me to play and perform on that same stage.
And what’s the moment you want to forget?
The very first concert that we played with the first line
up; we played a cover of Ironman, and our drummer smoked a joint before going
on stage and he completely forgot what we had practiced! Which looking back it
was pretty funny, but man did it suck!
If you could choose just one of your songs to represent
your music, what would it be and why?
The first single from our demo is called Shadows, and it
is a great song with a nice groove and it's also the first song that I ever
finished writing. It really has a great blend between our hard rock and metal
core influences, so I think it sums up our band at this point in our
career.

Double Dee Q&A
Your name:
Darwin and Dana Nelson.
Where are you from?
Lucedale, Mississippi, USA.
Name of band:
Double Dee.
Who else is in your band?
We are a husband-wife acoustic duo.
How would you describe yourselves?
Double Dee is a harmonic twist of acoustic sound and percussion with a “gumbo” of musical styles and tempos flavored by Southern accents and Gulf coastal tales. We are Americana singer-songwriters who also represent the Mississippi Songwriters’ Festival throughout the Southeastern United States.
Who are your main influences musically?
Little Big Town, Eagles, Restless Heart, Emerson Drive, Lady Antebellum, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Jimmy Buffett.
What do you hope to achieve in music?
Double Dee has the following cds available: Smack-Dab in Love 2007, Wind Song 2007, Wrinkle in Time 2010, Mom and Daddy’s in a Country Band 2012, Harmony 2012, and Live at Pirate’s Cove 2013. We would like for our music to continue to be recognized and respected by fans world wide, as well as be in demand by artists and pro-writers.
Darwin and I would like to travel and tour the USA and abroad. We are interested in house concert circuits as well as larger venues. We are pursuing gigs that will broaden our fan base throughout the states and internationally. We have been broadcast on international internet radio sites for the last six years. One goal that we have discussed is a Norwegian tour. We are also interested in USO tours.
We will be opening up for Vince Gill for a private fundraiser event in Mobile, Alabama on May 2nd. Darwin and I enjoy touring festivals and we look forward to headlining some this summer. On July 4th along with our friend Matt Hoggatt, we will be performing at the Bay Bear’s Stadium in Mobile.
We are part of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville entertainment family and we would love to do a tour of the Margaritavilles in the US and internationally as well. The two of us have discussed entertaining on a cruise ship after we retire from our teaching positions. That being said, I plan on retiring next May and Darwin, who could have retired in December, may soon follow suit.
Our music career has exploded in the last year and a half. We have actually been writing and recording our Double Dee originals together for the last seven years. Our Gulf Coast Mississippi songwriters have had an influence all over the state of Mississippi and we continue to collaborate and co-write with each other and build relationships with pro-writers from Nashville, and Perdido Key, Florida. Darwin and I were featured singer songwriters at the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival in November in Perdido Key, Florida.
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We were invited to join Matt Hoggatt at the invitational “Sixth String Festival” in New Orleans, Louisiana. We played at the “Storyville Tavern” and the “Top of the Tropical Isle” and we were introduced to “Parrotheads” from all over the country. Since that time some of those introductions have opened up a coastal Texas tour for us in June. Darwin and I have been invited to play on the CMA stage in Nashville, Tennessee the first week in June. We have been invited to Chicago, Illinois and Kinosha, Wisconsin this summer. In August we will be playing a house concert with Matt Hoggatt in Atlanta, Georgia.
We were invited by Mike Ramos, Jimmy Buffett’s personal assistant and the Jimmy Buffett organization to play at “The Landing” in Pensacola Beach with Matt Hoggatt and Johnny Mire for the pre-concert and post concert parties this past February 4th and 5th.
And what’s the moment you want to forget?
In 2008, Darwin and I were invited to play at a St. Jude Benefit in Purvis, Mississippi. Because it was an outside venue in a multi-purpose arena setting, we were not prepared for the late winter storm that came through that night while we were setting up for our concert. It was absolutely freezing that night and I know it must have been miserable for the musicians that had to play the guitars under those conditions.
If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Long Past Midnight is a murder mystery that was inspired by a tiny community in the Delta. Darwin and I worked on the song on and off for a year. We are proud of the end result. It definitely features our storytelling abilities and Darwin’s alternate tuning creations. That song is a favorite among our songwriting family and our pro-writer friends.

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
God has truly blessed Darwin and I. We love what we do. It is our passion and we are living our dream. Each open door has led to another opportunity. We love sharing our love of God, our love of family and our love of country in our storytelling and our lyrics. We love meeting musicians and people from all walks of life. We love the joy of songwriting and collaboration. Thank you for your interest in us and may our music tickle your ears and may it be an encouragement to your soul.

The Riot Scene Q&A
Your name:
Name of band:
Who else is in your band?
How would you describe yourselves?
Who are your main influences musically?
What do you hope to achieve in music?
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Where can we listen to it?
Where can we find out more about your music?
Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
Jimmy Nelson (guitars Lead Vox).
Where are you from?
Austin, Texas, USA.
Name of band:
The Riot Scene
Who else is in your band?
Erik Salinas (Guitars), Eric Braun (Bass backup vox) and Stephen Miller (Drums Backup vox).
How would you describe yourselves?
We are an energetic rock band with an eclectic array of influences from metal to pop and everything in between.
Who are your main influences musically?
Obviously a difficult question to answer. We are constantly listening and discovering new music and our favorite bands change frequently. I would have to say La Dispute, Title Fight, The Flatliners and The Bronx are definitely in our rotation at the moment. Of course we love our old school bands as well but there isn't enough time to get into that!
What do you hope to achieve in music?
We strive to bring out a surreal emotional response out of our audience. Getting their feet moving and brain thinking while making them feel the emotion we saturate our music in. As well as constantly writing and pushing ourselves to make our live performances the most memorable and entertaining experiences for our fans. I think what we hope to achieve varies from member to member but bottom line we really just love what we do. We would however love the opportunity to tour more frequently which is our goal for this summer.
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Sharing the stage with great bands like The Ataris, Alien Ant Farm and Daytrader has been pretty awesome. We've had the opportunity to work with some great producers and engineers that have taught us a thing or two. But I really feel like the future is the highlight for me. We all know that this is something we are going to be doing for a long time and that's something I've never had with bands in the past. Security and trust in the people around you is rare nowadays.
And what’s the moment you want to forget?
There was this house party we were asked to play a few years back. It was in a cliche suburban neighborhood and we all kept asking ourselves how this was gonna work cause we are LOUD! We drove all the way down there rolled all of our gear into their house and set up. We literally got halfway into our first song when a cop came knocking at our door and made us stop. lol I remember hearing the cop say that he actually really liked our band which kinda pissed me off even more! The cop was a jerk and made everyone at the party go into the backyard and get patted down. Needless to say their was some illegal substances at that party and some good kids and friends went to jail. I've always felt guilty about that.
If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I'm sure everyone in the band would give you a different answer to this question but for me it has to be our new single "Infused With Chaos". It has everything I love about this band crunched into it. Some how we stand right on the line in between this aggressive attack and poppy hooks. That's my vote anyway lol.
Where can we listen to it?
http://theriotscene.bandcamp. com/track/infused-with-chaos feel free to download it for free and share it too!
Where can we find out more about your music?
I know i'm gonna forget some and get hell from my band mates but here are the ones i can remember:
Our website is currently under construction but follow us and as soon as it's up and running we will let you know!
Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
Not that i can think of at the moment. We are going back in the studio this May. We are recording two more songs. Hopefully if all goes according to plan by the end of the year we will have released at least 8 tracks independently that we will pull together and release on vinyl!~ I'm excited about that. (^_^)
True Apothecary Q&A
Your name:
David Brooks (vocals, guitar).
Where are you from?
Originally North Carolina, but I've been living in New York for about 15 years now.
Name of band:
True Apothecary.
Who else is in your band?
Jared Garcin (guitar) Tom Parisi (drums) and Harold Beltre (bass).
How would you describe yourselves?
Musically I'd say we're some sort of indie/experimental rock band with pop vocals. It's hard to sum up our sound in a sentence or two, but if John Mayer had a lovechild with Circa Survive we'd probably hang out with that kid on the regular.
As people we're an odd, but quite humorous bunch of guys. We do well with a couple rounds of drinks ;)
Who are your main influences musically?
We all come from very different musical backgrounds. Jared (guitar) takes some influence from Circa Survive and Thrice. Tom (drummer) comes from a punk/ska/reggae background and LOVES Queen to death, also NOFX, (who I also dig). Harold (bass) has been with us about a month or two and seems to be all over the map, but we know he digs The Mars Volta. I, David, (vocals/guitar) take influence from Michael Jackson, Death Cab For Cutie and Further Seems Forever, (mostly the How To Start a Fire album).
What do you hope to achieve in music?
A self sustaining career would be nice, and infinite fame would be even better ;)
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Honestly, I think this current line-up has been the highlight thus far. It's been a long road to finding a group of musicians that are on the same page of dedication and talent. I've been working with Jared for about three years with True Apothecary through various line-ups. We found Tom about a year ago and now with Harold in the mix things are finally starting to move. We're not famous, but we're moving forward, which is a hard thing to do with four different points of view. This is the first time we're all looking in the same direction and that can be a difficult thing to achieve.
And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Ha...settling on past players and making compromises at our expense to make them feel more comfortable. I've lost numerous contacts and venues over stubborn players, whether it's a location or the equipment we have to use at a particular venue, or just a lousy schedule on their part. If True Apothecary was this line-up when Jared and I started I don't think I'd really have an answer for this question.
If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
The Eagle Has Landed. I think, (and hope), it gives off enough pop sensibility to attract the average top 40 listener while still maintaining an air of thoughtful musicality and experimentation. The song is in 5/4 time, which isn't something you typically find in mainstream music. True Apothecary is a band Jared and I put together to achieve something a little different, but still have substance to it. I think The Eagle Has Landed embodies that idea. Also, we had the good fortune of having Jay Sakong from Owel (another band to check out) guest vocal on it, and he sings like an angel.
Where can we listen to it?
http://trueapothecary. bandcamp.com/track/the-eagle- has-landed-feat-jay-sakong-2 it's a free download as well (so is the four song EP it's a part of).
Where can we find out more about your music?
Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
We'll be putting out a new EP by May. No title, but it's jam packed with goodness.
Obviously we'd like to sell the music we record, but if anybody can't pay for whatever reason, simply mail us at david@trueapothecarymusic.com and we'll be glad to send you a free download of any and everything we have. Money pays the bills, but if nobody listens to you then what's the point?

New video from Pete Van Dyk and the Second Hand Band
PETE Van Dyk and The Second Hand Band have released a video for their track Rise The Falling Sun.
The rock and roll band from Hamilton/Burlington, Ontario, are offering the track as a free download at http://petevandyk.bandcamp. com/
Pete said :"I’ve always been interested in simplicity. The Second Hand Band likes to produce our music, promote our activities, book our shows, and design our album art.
"This seems like it would complicate our music-making lives, but it actually makes it easier. There’s no second-guessing, and no pointing fingers at anyone else. Fans ultimately control a bands fate, but by keeping everything straightforward we hope that our intentions remain true and transparent. Frills are for your grocery needs.
"The video for Rise the Falling Sun is a distillation of us as a band. We wanted a video of a rock band. This is what we do and who we are, albeit with more extravagant lighting."
You can check out the video above and keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a Q&A with the band. And for more details visit http://petevandyk.com/

A.Z. Q&A
Your name:
Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
The original music industry - My thoughts "Love it, or leave it" there is no in between here. The most cruel industry on the planet but can also be the most rewarding in so many ways. Horns Up Breeders! :P
Clark Walker.
Where are you from?
Arab, Alabama, USA.
Name of band:
A.Z.
Who else is in your band?
Josh Thompson and Drew Hobbs.
How would you describe yourselves?
Hard hitting melodic metal with deep lyrical content. Heavy enough for many-a-mosh-pit yet melodic enough to get stuck in your head all day.
Who are your main influences musically?
John Petrucci, Steve Vai, The Nixons, Metallica, Sevendust, Taproot, Lamb of God, All That Remains, Bach, Nothing Face, Stereomud, Pulse Ultra, Classical Violin, Bury Your Dead, A Perfect Circle, etc..
What do you hope to achieve in music?
To be able to pay my bills doing what I love.
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Getting to create this machine which we call A.Z. It's all about the journey.
And what’s the moment you want to forget? Almost every battle of the bands we ever played. (Needless to say, we don't do those anymore, lol)
If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Probably an old song called "3 Days" which will be on our new album. It's very angry and driving, yet deep in meaning. It reflects us as a band very well. Over these 15 years we have learned to turn the anger and disappointment into drive and focus. To push forward and don't slow down!

From The Sticks Q&A
Your name:
My name is Rick Butcher.
Where are you from?
I am from the fenland outskirts of a small city called Peterborough in Cambridge. In a small village called Holme, which in fact hardly has roads worth the name and hardly any street lights as well as one shop.. no actually that just closed down so no shops.. and an internet that may as well be powered by hamsters running in a wheel. But what you lack in comforts you gain in the view. It's quite nice walking the wolf at night and actually using the stars as your street lights.

Band name:
The band is called From The Sticks and is clearly quite suited.
Who is in your band?
We're a four piece consisting of myself as vocalist, Tom Ellingworth Guitar, Nick Thompson-bel Bass and Adam Mansfield Drums. We're simply four strangers, three of whom met at an open mic night at a local pub The Duck And Drake and the fourth Nick who we found in the gutter outside somewhere and handed a Bass guitar.. luckily he picked it up very quickly.
We all jelled straight away, yet we didn't really aim for a genre and when we had played a good couple of shows had been classed as an "indie" group by many people. But truthfully we're just winging it and we will never see a band and say let's be like them its just not our style.

How would you describe yourselves? To be honest i could only describe ourselves as four very strange guy's who quickly have grown into brothers. Our music varies from serious topics to not so serious topics that have humour but every song always has an underline message that we rather let people figure out for themselves. If they get it then great and if they don't it doesn't really matter as long as they enjoy it and can tap their feet and hopefully forget the world for a second.
Who are your influences musically?
Our musical influences are always the toughest question to answer. We literally like everything from classical right down to prog-rock. I'd say Tom brings a good jazz feel to things, Nick brings the funk with his pops and slaps, Adam gives a good almost punky beat with a dancey indie twist and well myself I guess my writing style is what gives it all that root indie feel too it, but I sing from the soul even when it may not be classed as 'singing' .
What do you hope to achieve in music? The world. No but seriously, to simply make 40 quid a night and be able to just about survive doing this thing we already live and breath and just know that there's even 50 people out there who get and love what we're doing just as much as we do. Because at the end of the day yeah we write this stuff for ourselves but its for the people who want to listen. We'd be nothing without them.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?
We played the Willow Fest in our home town and got to headline on the Friday night to thousands of people, most of them probably to drunk to remember our names the next day, but we didn't mind being their one night stands, we'll still plan to play it again this year.
And what's the moment you want to forget?
Urm we had a gig recently for charity and I didn't really think about what I was saying afterwards as I said 'don't forget to hand your money to the guy with the pot' - that was a pretty epic fail.
If you could choose one song to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Hard to say. We really try to switch it up with each song but not so much people think they're listening to a different band. But I guess DMT has become a little bit of a love child for us so we'll go with that considering the recent success with the DIY video for it which I spent six months making out of bits of tissue paper card straw and whatever I could find!

Debut on the way from Jagwar Ma
JAGWAR Ma have announced their debut album Howlin will be out on June 10th on Marathon Artists.
The duo of Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield have enjoyed a whirlwind start to the year with their single The Throw.
They are releasing new track Man I Need in support of the album.
And the band's first London show saw them bring a densely packed basement to sweaty elation, and they have quickly gone on to share bigger stages, having just supported Foals on their European tour and the xx in their native Australia.
Jagwar Ma are now set for their own headline shows in the UK in May followed by a summer of festivals across Europe, Australia and Japan.
For more details on the band and their tour dates, visit facebook.com/jagwarma, soundcloud.com/jagwar-ma, jagwarma.com or twitter.comjagwarma
