The 286 Q&A

Your names:
Thomas Goddard and Spencer Hannabuss.

Where are you from?

London/Kent, UK.

Name of band:

The 286.

Who else is in your band?

Spencer (guitar & vocals), Tom (drums & vocals), Raf (keyboards), Josh & Manuel (strings), Andrew (bass).

How would you describe yourselves?

We are probably best described as a rock & roll orchestra. We are a little different to most indie rock bands as we have a string section in the line up! It's pretty random to clash two complete different type of music, but we have a lot of fun doing it. The cellos and violins feature a lot in the overall style and sound of the band, getting solos where you might expect to hear a lead guitar break or something. When we started the band we didn't want to follow the same approach that everyone else does in writing music and forming a group. We like to think we are pretty original and unique when compared to other underground acts.

Who are your main influences musically?

Our influences are really diverse. As a band we'd say we are influenced by The Beatles like a lot of bands but our music is a mix of loads of other artists too, such as Will I Am, Rihanna, Coldplay, Florence And The Machine, Calvin Harris and Flo Rida, Elbow and David Bowie. We like to think that comes across in our recordings, it's important to be diverse and accept different types of music.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

It would be great for the band to play at large venues and have our music heard how we think it deserves to be heard. We are getting great reaction from everyone who hears our music, especially on Twitter and Facebook, where our fanbase is really growing. That's important to us.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Hmm It would have to be a pick between playing the Cavern Club in Liverpool and being asked my Greenwich to perform at the Olympic Torch Parade as it was en route to the Olympic Stadium. Hopefully 2013 will be bigger and better.

And what's the moment you want to forget?

Too late, we've forgotten it already!!! That's an easy one. It was a gig where only half the band played. The ones there played really badly and we all walked off stage feeling really rubbish. Never again!

If you could choose one of your songs as an advert for your music, what would it be and why?

That's a tough question! Quite a lot of our songs have good 'hooks' and the strings really make them stand out. Little Louisa, a song from our nexty EP has a great riff and just makes you get up and dance, whilst we like to think Let the Rain Fall Down (also being released next year) is a great ballad where the strings play a massive part in making the song so great. One song that would be amazing for an advert would be the opening sequence of 'Beyond The World' from our debut EP. That would definitely work on an advert!

Where can we listen to it?

Our debut EP is already out. It's called 'A Victory For Battalion 286' and features some great tracks (in our humble opinion), especially Beyond The World and our lead track 'Hello' (here's the video to Hello - http://m.youtube.com/watch?desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DlJz29_Q1n9M&v=lJz29_Q1n9M&gl=US). It is available on download from http://the286.bandcamp.com/ and we're really pleased with it. Next year we are hoping to bring out at least a couple more EPs - so watch this space!

Where can you find out more about our music?

People can follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/the286) or on Twitter (http://twitter.com/the286 or @the286). Please check out these pages! Next year we will be launching our official website as well, which will have loads of great features on the band. But follow us on facebook and twitter to find out more information!
