Hearse Pileup Q&A

Your name:
Matthew Gaffen.

Where are you from?
Lewisham, South East London, born and raised.

Name of band:
Hearse Pileup.

Who else is in your band?
Tony Hoang and Wojciech Tybus.

How would you describe yourselves?
Angry. Spiritually successors to punk but with influences from hard rock, desert rock, and stoner/doom metal.

Who are your main influences musically?
Queens Of The Stone Age, Sabbath, Iggy and the Stooges, Motorhead, etc.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Social change on a global scale. More realistically, getting people to party hard whilst realising some of civilised society’s greater (and possibly necessary) evils. We try to write music that speaks from relatable, day-to-day, real life situations, but highlights wider socio-economic wrongs.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Our last gig at The Miller in London Bridge was a fucking killer - totally brought the house down. Plus it was the first event by Junction Sounds - an independent promotions group that puts on regular nights for musicians that is run by musicians, which I run with the lead from The Milk Bar.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Oh god, we once got lumped in to play the AAA in Knigtsbridge to 'Salad-Eaters' as Wojciech puts it. White-collar types who didn't really appreciate the aggressive nature of our sound. Needless to say we cleared the room with our first two chords, and the house kit, (which was damaged and patched back together with drumsticks for support struts), exploded in the last song. Spinal Tap eat your heart out!

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I guess it'd have to be Pretty Shiny Things still - it's simple, and our sound has started to move on a little as we start to get ready to record our first album, but it still resonates with what we're about; raw passion and making lots of noise!

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?
Our official website is www.hearsepileup.de/ad

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
Our EP is out now. We're completely independent, we run our own promotions group and occasionally our own nights, we build the website ourselves, do our own graphic design and music videos. The only thing we don't do is record ourselves, we leave that to Dropout Studios in Camberwell - great bunch (http://dropoutstudios.co/)
