Zurückspulen Q&A

Your name:
Glenn Kirchner

Where are you from?
Austin, Texas, USA

Name of band:

Zurückspulen (German for "Rewind")

Who else is in your band?

Karl Unsichtbar.  Also, some our songs include lyrics written by Christina Seiffert-Glidden, a classmate and fellow teenybopper in the 80s.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?

We never made it out of the 80s. We got our start back then using analog synthesizers, but the cheap ass ones. We'd flip through "Keyboard" magazine dreaming of owning a Jupiter 8, a Fairlight, Emulator, etc. Today's technology has allowed us the opportunity to use nearly perfect samples of those old beasts we so badly wanted. The hard part is staying true to the style of music now that there are so many bells and whistles on today's computers and keyboards. Our retro style of "New Wave" is a fairly small niche, but we promise our fans we won't sell out unless it's for money.

Who are your main influences musically?

We could go on for hours talking about what we'd learned from our heroes like Martin Gore, Alan Wilder, Vince Clarke, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Human League, etc., but for me (Glenn), I'd have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the eccentric and laid back approach Blancmange had. While the aforementioned artists were fairly consistent in style, Blancmange seemed more experimental, and yet sweet sounding synthpop was always the result. Oh, and who didn't admire the programming skills of Girogio Moroder? We spent hours trying to duplicate his arpeggios and sequences.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

We would love to be the reason people start rolling up their pants, bleaching their big hair, growing rat tails, and wearing white jazz shoes with no socks again. If we can't make that happen, we'll be okay with people to listening to our music and being taken back in time, if only momentarily.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

We are a relatively new band, so just being featured on internet radio stations makes us quite happy. Last week we were #2 in Loop Radio's "Top 30" countdown. They may be small victories, but they keep us going, and damnit!, we love what we do. We are also grateful to people like you, who showcase our band, along with so many other of today's awesome independent musicians.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

We'd love to forget the introduction of the Yamaha DX7 in 1983. It killed our careers before they even got started. It was the beginning of the end for analog synthesis and New Wave synthpop. After that, everything was just kinda "pop". The thing was also a bitch to program.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

It would have to be "The Bomb". Christina penned the lyrics in the early 80s, and like most kids back then, she was worried about nuclear war with the Soviets. We receive lots of feedback about how the cheesy, yet thick synth sounds coupled with the old school lyrics truly transport people back in time when we play it. If you were a kid back then, you will most likely relate to the song.
