your band?
Ben (keys), James (electric guitar), Woody (bass) and Jonny
(drums).
How
would you describe yourselves and your music?
We’re an
indie-rock five-piece. Our songs tend towards serious topics – love, loss,
mortality, politics – but onstage we have a lot of fun playing them. We love
having contrasts in our sound, mixing up big, anthemic electric tunes with
really quiet, intimate moments.
Who
are your main influences musically?
Our songwriting
comes from the folk-revival tradition - Dylan, Cohen, Nick Cave are all big
influences on the lyrics - but we’re all quite different musically. Folk,
blues, prog rock, and classical music are all elements. I guess we see
ourselves alongside lyrical indie rock bands, like the National, Radiohead, To
Kill A King and Arcade Fire.
What
do you hope to achieve in music?
Obviously, we’d
love to be able to do it full time and spend our days writing music, recording
and touring, but that’s a hard road. Having small goals is important. The goal
for this year is working towards our first album which we’re really excited
about.
What
has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
It’s always hard
to name one. We did our first UK tour last Autumn and played 16 dates across
the country. That was probably the most ambitious thing we’ve done as a band,
so that whole process of playing to lots of new people was a highlight.
Recording the new single Five Years was also a brilliant process as a band. It
was the first time it felt like we really properly gelled and felt completely
like we were all going exactly the same direction.
And
what’s the moment you want to forget?
Fortunately, not
too many. We’ve played some awful gigs along the way where no one has turned up
or the sound has completely disintegrated, but that’s just part of being in a
band. You’ve got to always try and learn from these things, so we don’t really
want to forget even the worst moments.
If
you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it
be and why?
Five Years is
the new single and I’m pretty sure the whole band agree it’s the best thing
we’ve done to date. We’ve had a couple of years working out our sound and
trying different things, and Five Years is definitely the direction we’re
looking to go in the future.
