Where are you from?
We’re from Hull, East Yorkshire – tucked away in what is the bottom of England’s “North East”.
Band name:
Age of Atlas.
Who else is in your
band?
The Twins – Kye
on bass and Keelan on guitar, Mikey on drums and me on vocals and sweating duties.
How would you
describe yourselves and your music?
Hairy, sweaty,
melodic, mathy, hard rock.
Who are your main
influences musically?
King’s X, Coheed
and Cambria, Corelia, Tides of Man, Deftones, Soundgarden, Hum, Smashing
Pumpkins, Shiner, Karnivool, Tool – basically a lot of alternative guitar based
bands with big vocals and a propensity to try weird shit.
What do you hope to
achieve in music?
To always push
for something better. Whether it’s being better than the last show, the last
song, the last video, the last recording, the last practice, we want to push
ourselves, and hopefully through doing that amass a decent little collection of
works.
What has been the
highlight of your career so far, and why?
It’s a recent
one, the other week in fact: We’re currently recording the main vocal tracks for the
album, after having spent what seems like an age recording guitars. We were all
sat in the control room whilst Mikey was doing the roughest of mixes of one of
the tracks. Parts were looping as he EQed things and adjusted volumes and the
other three of us were lounging around, chatting away, on phones. As a
finishing touch Mikey added a bit of delay to the main vocal and played the
track from the beginning. We all shut up and listened. Keelan turned to me
about half way through and said “Is this us? Did we do this?”. There was a
mutual feeling of disbelief at what we made. Something more than the sum of its
parts. Something better than we’d ever managed previously. It may seem like an
odd choice for a “career highlight”. It’s a very insular moment shared between
the band. But we do this for ourselves and that moment, for me, represents
everything I love about being in this band. Our hard work paying off, and being
able to gain a sense of wonder and awe from that.
And what’s the
moment you want to forget?
I’m tempted to
say a recent headline gig at Humber Street Sesh (a day long festival in the
city showcasing local musical talent from every genre imaginable). I’d stumbled
to the floor halfway through the second song and my trousers split at the
crotch. Fly to butt crack ripped in two. I was just wearing two leg sleeves for
the rest of the set. But that wasn’t all that bad to be fair. Helped with
general sweatiness. An impromptu cooling system. It could’ve been made worse.
Because of my sweatiness on stage I regularly consider not wearing underwear
just to save on laundry. That day I, thankfully (for my own sake at least), did
forget to adhere to this odd resolution and had worn underoos.
If you had to pick
just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I’d say one of
our newer tracks, Dead Eyed Sigils Of Our Failures Against Distance. It’s the track
I alluded to in the career highlight question. We’ve been playing it live for
some time and tinkering with it all the while. Big chourses, big serpentine
guitar lines, massive drums and heft bass all over the place. The overall mood
of the song is quite odd. It’s ambiguous. Falls left of centre. Soaring moments
with an undercurrent of melancholy. Whilst we don’t try to replicate that vibe
on every track I think the intention to create multifaceted music is what I’d
like to shine through. Whether it does for anyone else, I don’t know. Maybe it
will if any listeners have read this. Maybe I’ve managed to indoctrinate them
with simple text. Fuckkking Miiiiiind COntrooolLlLlLlL!
Where can we listen
to it?
It’ll be on our
album – which is nearing completion with a release on a horizon somewhere in
sometime and some point between now and the end of forever.
We’ll be
releasing a video for it and banging that up on youtube
And in the
meantime, should you wish to hear it, come and see us live and shout something
incomprehensible at us during the first few songs and few might play it to
drown out your heckling.
