The Lost Souls Club Q&A

Your name:
Jon Tufnell, singer, guitarist.

Where are you from?
I'm from Winchester, but the rest of the band are from Southampton, Brighton and London.

Name of band:
The Lost Souls Club.

Who else is in your band?
James Freemantle (bass), Simon Jackson (guitar), and Andy Head (drums).

How would you describe yourselves?
Fuzzed out rock n' roll with a bit of Johnny Cash style soul searching thrown in to bring things down.

Who are your main influences musically?
The White Stripes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Sabbath, The Dandy Warhols, The Kills, The Who, Led Zep, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Rob Dougan.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We've all been playing in various bands for quite a long time and we have no delusions of grandeur. No-one sets themselves up to be the most influential of bands, its just happens if the timing is right and the music is good enough. Our goal is to play music we love and for it to hopefully resonate with enough people that we can do it without compromise.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Travelling to Asia and playing China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Places we never thought we'd visit, let alone gig. Our first show in Vietnam was a headline slot to 2000 people who went crazy like we were The Beatles. To be so far from home, with such a language and cultural divide, but for music to bridge the gap so effortlessly was incredible. That's a memory I'll take to the grave.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Having a leg of an Australian tour pulled at the last moment so we ended up stuck in a halfway house for ex-cons with no money, no shows and the worst weather Sydney had seen in decades. We had nothing to do but sit in this tiny room for over two weeks trying not to take our frustrations out on each other.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
That's really hard as we have a pretty diverse set of songs. Some pretty loud, fuzzy, doomy rock and some really gentle acoustic tracks all of which at different times feel like they say exactly how I feel that day. So today I will go with I Know I Spoke Too Soon as I'm half asleep having driven through the night to get to Edinburgh for the first show of our tour and its a dreamy track.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
Maybe that we're about as DIY as it gets. All the artwork, production, recording, mixing etc is all done by usand so what you see and hear is undiluted, not a studio fixed version of what we do. Hopefully keeping it that way will ensure as direct a link between our ideas and what people hear and feel.
