Over The Effect Q&A

Band name:
Over The Effect.

Where are you from?
The band is located in Atlanta GA. Aaron is originally from Alabama, Ashley is a life-long ATL resident.

Who is in your band?
Ashley Barker plays guitar and sings, Aaron Kamphuis plays bass and does all our recording and engineering. We also have recently added Rob Nouryeh as our new drummer.

How would you describe yourselves?
Ashley: As a band, we're catchy enough to sing along to, but complex enough to be respected. We write songs that have meaning to us and are fun to play.
Aaron: Despite the serious and sometimes depressing aspect of our music, we're both completely goofy people, pretty relaxed and easy going.

Who are your main influences musically?
Ashley: Pearl Jam, Tool, Soundgarden, a lot of early 90s rock music, but I also grew up listening to a lot of hip hop, classic rock, and salsa music. All of that stuff finds it's way into our music.
Aaron: Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, Alice In Chains, Rush, Hum, Deftones. I listened to a lot of different stuff growing up. From punk rock to prog rock, jambands to jazz.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Ashley: Our dream is to make a comfortable enough living to focus all of our time and energy on making music, recording and performing.
Aaron: I want to tour Europe.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Ashley: We've played a friend of ours house a few times. House parties are typically not a huge deal for most bands, but it's always been a really good time, and she keeps asking us back. Nikki's house parties are the best.
Aaron: I would say self producing our own stuff on our own timetable, without anyone other than our own creative consciousness to answer to. Also, the first time I heard one of our songs on radio was a rush!

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Our second show was terrible. It was a Monday night, we were not on our game at all, and everything that could have went wrong did. The venue was an upstairs room with this awfully rickety metal stairway that was like an old school fire escape, which made load in a nightmare. The opening band was on their first out of town show, and seemed kinda bummed there wasn't more of a turn out. The second band brought a decent number of people with them, but then they all left as soon as they were done. So we played for the opening band and the bartender, and it's pretty unanimous that it's not our finest hour.

If you had to choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Ashley: Sunshine - it's melodic fun passionate rock, a blast to play and a great set closer.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
We're currently working on our fifth EP, which should be out by September. We really love being able to constantly write and record new music.
