Fragile Creatures Q&A

Your name:
Adam Kidd.

Where are you from?
Born in Hull raised in Brighton, England.

Name of band:
Fragile Creatures.

Who else is in your band?
In order of recruitment: Aaron Neville, Tom Alty, James Crump, Adam Whittles.

How would you describe yourselves?
I hate describing us! We're either pop, indie pop, indie rock, rock or some other genrelisation! We play melodic songs live, with real instruments. We have intriguing arrangements and write about some unusual subject matter.

Who are your main influences musically?
I started on The Beatles as a pre-teen, then found out about The Clash and adored London Calling, I was a teen through Britpop and particularily loved Blur at the same time as buying every Radiohead thing I could get my hands on. I fell in love with The Band thanks to The Last Waltz. I've spent plenty of time listening to Elliott Smith and Ron Sexsmith records. More recently I've been closely following Grizzly Bear and Band of Horses. I've also done my time with At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta and at one point love the Manic Street Preachers so much I used to wear eyeliner to school!

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I want to see the world from a tour bus window and release and album people will love.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I did a bunch of summer festivals singing backing vocals for Thomas White's (Electric Soft Parade/Brakes) second solo album a couple of years ago... we did Guilfest, Beautiful Days, Meltdown... I really enjoyed those times, full of surreal moments and almost meeting embarrassing celebrities (like N-Dubz or Madonna)... I can't wait to take Fragile Creatures on adventures like those!

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
We played a show in Eastbourne the other week and when we got to the venue the poor kid who was putting it on was arguing with the landlady over access to the PA (she allowed him to book bands in the function room and expected to use the PA for a pub quiz downstairs!) and to add real insult to injury there was a dried dog poo left on the stage which no one from the pub was prepared to clean up. I got rid of it myself! Never playing there again.

If you could choose one of your songs as an advert for your music, what would it be and why?
I think She Makes Me Nervous is quite a good advert for us because it showcases two sides of our slightly schizophrenic approach to songwriting in one track! It has slow tempo sections with lush harmonies crashing into up-beat foot-stomping sections that rock out telling the tale of what it is like when the wrong kinf of woman falls in love with you. It's also a lot of fun to play live!

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
We're releasing a new single 'Stowaways' in the new year - keep your ears peeled for it. It's a pretty song about trying to escape the impending doom of the planet by stowing aboard an alien spacecraft. You'll love it!
