The Marivaux Q&A

Your name:
Rik Packer (bassist in band).

Where are you from?
Manchester.

Name of band:
The Marivaux.

Who else is in your band?
Phil McAdam (vox, guit), Matt Shields (lead guit) and Ben Peacock (drums).

How would you describe yourselves?
Four 20-somethings creating an escape from the daily grind - it's basically our hopes, fears and feelings made with indie rock ingredients. We're pretty 'happy go lucky' really, we just love to play and create a vibe that real people want to be a part of, instead of this manufactured crap you hear on every f*cking station.

Who are your main influences musically?
Obviously we love bands and artists from all eras (Rolling Stones, Led Zep, The Doors, Kings of Leon, Nirvana), but it's our friends and family who inspire us to write and tell stories which haven't been heard so really they're our main influence.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We want to connect with people because we can't be the only ones who are dejected and uninspired by the majority of the current music crop - it's dire! Songs about magic and chocolate are perfectly pleasant but what is it actually telling us? Fuck all. So I guess we want to achieve a total overhaul of modern chart music. Because it's meaningless and our favourite bands have real soul.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Probably touring Europe in 2012. We bought our own bus, made our own CDs, sold our own T-shirts and found our calling in life. Nobody could stop us and it confirmed how much we loved being in a band; playing gigs, meeting people and seeing the world. Amazing.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
We've forgotten more than we'd care to admit but I reckon playing a gig to one person, who was our mate and actor in our videos (Jack Johnson), in Manchester a couple of years ago was a pretty low point! I think he enjoyed it though.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Of the tunes people can listen to online I'd say 'Insides' because it's got a bit of dirt to it and gets people going at the gigs. We have a few unreleased which is our quintessential sound - but people can't hear them yet...

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band/music that I forgot to ask?
There's a massive array of talent in Manchester just waiting to be unleashed. Young bands like Dirty Brunswick & Rum Thief are worth checking out and we filmed a load of talent on our Insides video, BMXers, dancers etc, which people have to see. It's as they say - Manchester is wonderful.
