Who else is in your band? 

Alex Borwick from The Young Folk on banjo and mandolin, Darragh Cullen of The Sour Seeds on bass and vocals, Conor McLoughlin of Sub Motion on guitar and Sean O'Connor of Sub Motion on drums and vocals.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?

We're a country rock group. We went to school together and played in different bands, but this is the first time we've played in this line up, and it's worked pretty well for us so far.
We all come from a rock background, however I've always had a country twang in my voice. I tried to fight it when I was younger, I sang and played in rock and blues bands and had a great time. I loved the music we were playing and still do, but everyone always said to me "you sound like a country singer", and growing up country music just wasn't cool, but I don't care what people think these days. That twang is what comes out naturally. So in the last few years I've decided to embrace my country roots, because of this the music I started making improved dramatically, it came out so much easier. I was able to combine my country vocals with my rock/blues influences and it all just worked.

Who are your main influences musically?

Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, John Mayer, Brad Paisley, The Eagles, Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the list is endless really.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

I want making music to be our careers. I love writing with the band and collaborating with other artists. But there's no better feeling than when we're playing live., We're not after fame and fortune (although they'd obviously be a welcome bonus) we just want to play to as many people as possible in as many places as we can.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

I can't pick one, so I'll quickly talk about three.
Last March we played to a full room at the Button Factory in Dublin, and that was the start of Alex Jordan & Co.
We then started gigging for most of last summer, playing festivals all around Ireland. One of the most enjoyable shows we did was at Electric Picnic last year.
However personally making this first record and releasing it has been the highlight for me so far. I feel in one sense it was a long time coming, and I'm so happy that it's finally out, after it had been recorded and mastered I started contemplating whether or not to release it, and I almost didn't, but thankfully we did, and it's going well.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

I don't want to forget any of it! Everyone makes mistakes and regrets in this industry, but without them we don't learn, and that means we don't improve. I mean if we did everything perfect the first time, then the next move would be a negative one, if we peaked on our first performance or our first record, then we've done something very wrong. We're not trying to be a one hit wonder, we're here to stay.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Borderline (The first track off our debut EP Leap of Faith). The song shows what we do best, it's country with attitude, and a catchy chorus. It's the song that people talk to us about the most. It starts off this simple acoustic track with strong lyrics and then we get to the chorus where the whole band enters, and we all let loose. We're not a rock band but we're not a country and western band either, we think we're somewhere in the middle, and that suits us to a T. Borderline really demonstrates our sound, there's acoustic elements in it, it shows off vocal ranges, but we also get to rock out during it, the song shows off almost everything that we can do...almost.

Anything else you’d like to say about your music that I forgot to ask?

We've just released our debut EP 'Leap of Faith' it's available on all digital outlets.
We're currently booking gigs for throughout this year, and we've announced this week our first ever headline gig in the UK, where we'll be launching 'Leap of Faith' in The Water Rats, London on June 26th.

We've already started working on the next record, which should be out around Summer of next year, but we might release a single or two later this year or early next year.

Conor Dardis Q&A

Your name:

Conor Dardis.

Where are you from?

Dublin, but I live in Preston.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?

I call my music Immigrant Suburban Folk. It started as a tongue-in-cheek thing but it's kind of stuck. 

My songs generally carry a narrative and are framed in the working-class setting of the Dublin suburb I grew up in; Clondalkin. They are stories that are happening to people every day and I hope that's what makes them resonate with the listener. There are lots of songs about the romance of cities and lots about beautiful wide open spaces, but simple stories set in the suburbs where most of us live are thin on the ground so I made the decision early on to focus on writing about them.

Who are your main influences musically?

Shack, Springsteen and Mazzy Star with some Billy Bragg and Wilco 'Mermaid Avenue' thrown in there.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

The dream right now is to record a great album; one that the listener can get lost in. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

The guys over at Wasted Years Records were the first to review my music and compared it to Springsteen and Johnny Cash. To paraphrase my best mate Jim's reaction, 'How could it ever get better?'.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Forgetting lyrics on stage was not my finest hour.

Anything else you’d like to say about your music that I forgot to ask?

I think the reward for anyone listening to my music lies in empathy with, or at the very least, understanding of the characters and the narratives in the lyrics. The melodies and instrumentation are deliberately simple to aid the delivery of the stories. So if you take the time to listen, listen closely.

Introducing Conor Dardis

EMERGING suburban folk artist Conor Dardis has shared a series of tracks.

The Dublin-born singer-songwriter - now living in Preston, Lancashire - got in touch with RealSoundsOK to tell us about his music.

He said: "My songs are set in the working class suburban Dublin of my formative years. They depict everyday local characters as the negotiate life's various pressures and challenges.

"The stories and themes could be pulled from the pages of an evening newspaper - singing about railway stations, butcher shops and endless cups of tea.

"The songs lack sentimentality and instead capture those small neighbourhood details that typically slip through the cracks. The whispered conversations at the pub about the couple whose marriage is floundering. Or the rumour about the wild kid who has found unlikely and fleeting calm in a new girlfriend."

Where are you from?

I’m from Ireland, Dublin until the age of 9 then Kildare.

Who else is in your band?

Steven Hinds sings gloriously and plays guitar gracefully and Matthew Eyre slinks and slides all over the bass with much pazzazz and loads of oomph.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?

We are three gentlemen who politically look to the left and love to steep ourselves in music. Our music is rock music with a poppy feel and brilliant to sing along with. We love riffs and unexpected chord changes over beats you can shake it down to.  

Who are your main influences musically?

David Bowie, Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Smashing Pumpkins are the acts that brought us together. After that, there’s too many to list.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

To make music that connects with people and that people enjoy. Also, to finish off all the songs we’ve half written!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Hearing our music on the radio was definitely a highlight, no question. Also, playing big festivals has been lots of fun. Of late, we’ve had some brilliant gigs that seem to be lifting the bar. I would like to hope we have more highlights to look forward to.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

I’ve already forgotten them all. Onwards and upwards to infinity and beyond.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

That’s a tough one. We cover a lot of different styles and themes. I’m going to pick our most recent single, ‘Letters of Last Resort’ as I feel it has a bit of the old and a good dollop of the new MDT sound.

There’s loads of things I could say about our music but I don’t like boring people. I guess, we are a very authentic band….none of what we do is contrived or trying to fit into certain genres or moulds. After that, you will need to listen yourself to see what you think.

Album coming from This Other Kingdom

NEO-psychedelic rock band This Other Kingdom will release their album Telescopic on April 11th.

It comes two years after the Dublin-based outfit's debut EP Sunlight.

The four-piece - made up of Del Kerton, Declan Dunne, Fran Mulholland and Chris Sweeney - also have a string of live dates coming up.

We're a pretty straight forward, indie rock band - two guitars, a bass, drums and vocals.

Who are your main influences musically?

We all listen to lots of different music, but I guess we sound most like Vampire Weekend, or The Vaccines or early Bombay Bicycle Club, or another Irish band: Raglans. We've been compared to The Smiths, Two Door Cinema Club and The Arctic Monkeys as well, though I'm not really to sure about that one!

What do you hope to achieve in music?

To be able to record an album and play a few festivals would be awesome.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Highlights so far: We got to record our debut EP with Francesco Gatti, who produces for a really good Irish band called All Tvvins, he was brilliant to work with and even just being in studio was so much fun. Other than that I think we would all pick out one particular gig in a place called Crowbar in Dublin which was great fun! We recently played our EP launch in the Grand Social in Dublin which was sweet.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

None.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

If we had to pick one song that represents us it would probably be First Winter, which was the lead single from Mixed Messages (our debut EP). It's upbeat and catchy with a singable chorus and a cool guitar riff, which is the sort of music we mostly end up writing.

Second album from Analogue Wave

ELECTRONIC duo Analogue Wave return with their second album Casimir.

The follow up to 2013's n.l.g.W.v. sees the Dublin-based band explore a harder and darker sound.

Opening track I Feel Hollow - which you can hear below - starts off that change from the word go.

Del and Andy from the band told RealSoundsOK: "Work on Casimir started almost immediately after the release of n.l.g.W.v.

"From the start we knew we wanted to try different things, which has resulted in a mish-mash of styles and sounds.

"The album has been financed by a successful fund it campaign and was produced by us.

"All the artwork was taken by Gint (Andy) on a trip to Club Tropicana just outside Havana, Cuba. The drinks were free (once you bought a ticket) - there was fun and sunshine and the sea was missing."

How would you describe yourselves?

Zeb vs Zeus is 'fictional' band that makes 'real' music. Made up of bickering siblings Zeb & Zeus, we will be releasing two versions of all our songs - a Zeb version and a Zeus version - which will go head to head to see who's version is the best. Each song release will be preceded by a mockumentary style YouTube video, chronicling the trials and tribulations of Zeb & Zeus, the first of which Episode 1 - How to Start a Band is now available on our YouTube channel. 

While we enjoy making quirky videos to market our music, we mostly just love to make great music. We have released our first 'duel' single 'Out of Wax' on 2nd June with our second to follow in July 2014.

Who are your main influences musically?

Radiohead, Muse, Coldplay, Ocean Colour Scene, Bob Dylan.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Like all the other musicians out there, we just want to avoid having to get a 'real' job and have fun along the way. We'd really love to make it as an independent band. We record, mix and master our own music, shoot and edit all our own videos. It's a lot a work but it gives us the freedom to things the way we want to. We love writing songs and making videos and hope that someone out there will enjoy them as much as we enjoyed making them.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Just getting things off the ground for our first release was an achievement in itself. Most people don't know the amount of work an indie band has to put in behind the scenes with recording and mixing the music, shooting and editing the videos, setting up and maintaining the social media, building websites, etc.... Getting the ball rolling is often the most difficult step. Now we just want to keep the momentum going.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Well that would have to be the microphone stand hurdle incident of 2014! Luckily I can still have children! Zeb Tip #1 - Microphone stands do not make good hurdles, even if you are wearing a cape!

Well that's easy to answer, we've only released one song (2 versions) so far - 'Out of Wax'

We developed the Zeb vs Zeus idea when both Adam and John moved out of Dublin making it a bit difficult to practice and perform together. Subsequently, Adam moved back to Dublin from New Zealand and John currently lives in Bangor near Belfast. We meet up whenever possible to shoot video footage for episodes of Zeb vs Zeus, music videos and other quirky ideas to help get our music out there.

How would you describe yourselves? 

A group of mates having fun while trying to take over the world!

Who are your main influences musically? 

Music in general is our main influence, pretty much anything from Pink Floyd to the Strokes, from Oasis to QOTSA

What do you hope to achieve in music? 

We hope to look back in 20 years and find out that our music had inspired people across the world, because in the end that's what music is all about innit? Oh and we'd also like to sip whiskey and smoke cigars with Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why? 

Every gig/festival/radio appearance, every person we meet and connection we build really matter to us however winning the "Single of the year" for Music Magazine "Sunset Island Music" and appearing on Ireland's Top Rock station "RADIO NOVA" were definitely some of the highlights so far!!

And what’s the moment you want to forget? 

Nothing so far!!!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why? 

I cant really pick one song to be honest, it's like asking a parent to pick their favourite child and that would not happen!!, I suppose every song we write should represent our music otherwise what is the point in doing it? Unless you are doing it just for the revenue which is a different and sadly common cause these days.

Pelicans Q&A

Mark Sheridan.

Where are you from? 
Dublin, Ireland.

Name of band: 
We are called Pelicans.

Who else is in your band?  
Well I'm the bass player. David Bridgeman is the singer, Eric Fitzgerald is the lead guitarist and John Phelan is the drummer.

How would you describe yourselves? 
I'd say that we're a band with a dreamy and increasingly dark sound. We use lots of guitar delays and effects and have a tightly focused rhythm section underneath. It's really nice that we're often compared to bands such as The Cure and The Maccabees, we love these bands. We started off with a more radio orientated style but our recent music is taking a heavier turn than the older stuff, which I think is helping us refine our sound more. Mostly, we love playing live and are always writing new material whenever we can.

Who are your main influences musically? 
Mine would be bass players such as Flea, Victor Wooten and also Geddy Lee. My ideas for fills and bass licks often come from something I have learned from listening to them play. As a band though, we have a huge range of influences across many genres of music.

What do you hope to achieve in music? 
We enjoy playing together so much that it would be great to play shows more often and release material on a regular basis. Hopefully we'll get a following of people that like listening to our music as much as we enjoy playing it.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why? 
Last Summer we played a gig in Paris on my birthday. There was a great crowd there and the gig was brilliant. We got a great taste of what it's like to be on tour in a foreign country. We can't wait to taste more.

And what’s the moment you want to forget? 
Not really right now. Everything so far, the good and bad, has been a great learning experience for us.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why? 
Out of the songs we have released I would pick Sylvie. I think it shows our sound progression from our earlier music very well. Our new stuff has more bite to it I think, and it's shown in Sylvie.

Max Dunbavin Q&A

Your name:

Max Dunbavin.

Where are you from?

Birmingham, UK, although most of my family are from Dublin and I prefer to identify as Irish when possible.

Name of band: 

I'm in a band called One + One = Three [ https://www.facebook.com/1plus1equals3band ].

Who else is in your band? 

My band consists of myself on vocals, rhythm guitar and keys, Jonathan Horton on lead guitar, Daniel White on Bass & Backing Vocals, and Cian Loane on Drums.

How would I describe myself?

I like to consider myself someone who's not afraid to push boundaries, and hell even someone who is a bit rebellious. However, I don't know whether that translates into my music. 

Who are your main influences musically?

Ah I have a host of influences, and I always love talking about them, here goes. I'd say my main influences, narrowed down of course, are, firstly Radiohead. They're my favourite band, and one that changed my life through their music, and I love everything they stand for. I love Jonny's diminished solos, Thom's general craziness, Ed's atmospheric guitar playing, Phil's simple- yet ingenious drumming and Colin's grooves, and of course, how it all fits together. I just love Radiohead.

Another major influence I always cite is Lou Reed/ The Velvet  Underground. I cried the day Lou Reed died, and I know how silly that sounds. I feel 3 of the 4 velvet underground albums [The Velvet Underground & Nico, Loaded and White Light White Heat] and of course, Lou Reed's solo debut, Transformer are all seminal in not only who I am musically, but me as a person too. I think it is namely Lou Reed's unfiltered badass-dedness and the aura of rebellion that surrounds his name, and also how he and the Velvet Underground made music that was so ahead of its time, and was only discovered by the mass majority of people after the band split. For that Lou Reed should be hailed as the hipster god, although I'm glad he's not.

My third major influence I feel it's my responsibility to credit are Nirvana. In my opinion, Nirvana may be the best band that ever was, albeit not my favourite, and they remind me of every piece of music that it is organic, and not manufactured, even if it is a stark contrast stylistically to Nirvana, for example, Gymnopedie no.1 by Erik Satie [Which by the way is one of my favourite ever pieces of music]. 

My other influences include- Interpol, U2, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, Bob Marley,  Four Tet, Erik Satie, Portishead, The xx, The Clash, and a little band from Vancouver called Redrick Sultan.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

This is a funny question for me. Of course what I'd hope to achieve would to be as big as any one of my musical heroes, but I think if you expect anything from music, you expect too much, which is why I write music for aesthetic pleasure, then if other people enjoy it, I see it as a bonus. Music for me is the biggest part of my life, not including social aspects, and all I ever want from it is personal enjoyment, so as long as I'm happy, whether that's within my own home, a pub gig, or a Glastonbury headline set, it doesn't matter to me.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

I'm not sure I could pick out a highlight of my career, mainly as it hasn't been very long and I'm rather inexperienced. As I say, I write music for aesthetic pleasure, so when someone else tells me they enjoy it I always like that, but all in all the absolute highlight would maybe one of my better gigs, the recording of the demo of 'Sorceress [Of Somnia]' or 'Waiting for the Wind', or perhaps this Q&A.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

I think quickly after starting gigging, I disappeared up my own arse a bit. I regret that, I became something that I hate - arrogant, and at that arrogance with little to show for it, and I'd never do it again.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Sorceress [Of Somnia] if I really had to. It's because of how the song changes constantly and dramatically, I have good memories about writing it, and the lyrics paint a picture to me which is very personal about things and experiences I haven't enjoyed, such as how I have been victim of bullying earlier in my life and my ultimate pet hate- lying, and the music with lyrics combined felt like a big middle finger to all of that.

New track from Ghost Maps

THIS is the video for Vanilla, the new track from Ghost Maps.

The man behind the project is Jeff Martin, who is a founding member of the acclaimed Irish band Halfset, which was nominated for the Choice Music Prize.

Ghost Maps will release the album The Ocean From The River on November 15th, with Martin teaming up with long-term collaborator John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake) on drums and a guest piano appearance from Tony Crow (Lambchop).

How would you describe yourselves? 

A neo-psych rock n roll band.

Who are your main influences musically? 

We like a lot of modern bands out there like Tame Impala, Black Angels, BRMC, Brian Jonestown Massacre etc..but have a big love for older stuff like The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Joy Division, The Zombies etc

What do you hope to achieve in music? 

We really hope to get to see the world and get our music out to as many people as possible.  It would be great to play music as a full time job. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Our EP Launch in The Grand Social in Dublin. It was a magical experience...One we will never forget as it was our first and my first ever release.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

There's probably a few things I have forgotten already...I'm good at blocking things from my mind.

If you had to choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

I reckon the three of us could have a good argument over this...I'm really liking the direction it's going and the new songs are definitely riding the sound I wanted anyway.  Maybe Vacate The Horror, it's quite dark and scary. It also has that psych feel to it...
