Miss Emily (aka: Emily Fennell).

Where are you from? 

Milford, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.

How would you describe yourself? 

I'm a full-time musician who's lived off of my music for the past ten years. I've toured Canada and parts of the US, playing everything from small bars to large festivals. I've had a number of original acts over the years, ranging in genre, and have been using the 'Miss Emily' moniker for the past four and a half years. My music is soul based and crosses over other genres such as rock, pop and blues.

Who are your main influences musically?  

I've had some awesome opportunities to work with some worldwide talents, including member(s) of The Tragically Hip, Spin Doctors and Gene Simmons of KISS. I've been influenced by everyone I've ever worked with in some way. I'm a sponge. I soak up as much info I can take from my musical experiences.

What do you hope to achieve in music? 

My main goal has always been to live off of my music (and support my family with it). I've been able to do that for some time now, and with each passing year, I make new goals in hopes of expanding my abilities and opportunities. I have a new album out now and am hoping to use it to increase my fan base and hopefully inspire some other music makers.  :)

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?  

I played a one day, four-act event in June of 2011 in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada, with The Tragically Hip, Sam Roberts Band and The Trews. It sold out in a matter of a few days and we played to 28,000 people. It was an amazing experience and a Juno award-winning documentary was made about the event – “The Tragically Hip in Bobcaygeon”. (The Junos are the Canadian music awards)

And what’s the moment you want to forget?  

A gig I did at least 12years ago where I had to learn two hours of music from 1968. 1969? A GREAT year in music! 1968? Not so much...

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?  

I have a song I wrote called 'The Sellout'. It's on my new album and we've recorded a few unreleased versions over the last few years. It takes the power back from a negative stereotypical music career burn, I like to think.

Where are you from? 

Milford, Connecticut, USA.

Name of band: 

Moving Brooklyn. 

Who else is in your band? 

Ant, Paul, Kevin, Kris.

How would you describe yourselves? 

As a band, we're very detail oriented. Kris and Paul know all this music theory, which comes in handy. They have this guitar-lingo back and forth going on, where they understand one another really well, then work off that. Ant is inventive and creative when we're writing. He matches my vocals in his parts, and is a big factor in the writing process. We all collaborate easily and have been friends forever. As people, we mainly like sports, ranch dressing, and doing weird voices. We're going to have a sketch "comedy" show one day. All the jokes would only be funny to us. Like, fewer people will watch it than "That 80's Show". We're all serious about what we do and very passionate about it as well. 

Who are your main influences musically?

We're all inspired by different artists, some of which are shared, others that are specific to each of us. Among the list: Anberlin, Nirvana, Manchester Orchestra, Blink-182, Story of the Year, Conditions, Coheed and Cambria, Good Old War, Bayside, Foo Fighters, Motion City Soundtrack, and Relient K. Ant likes Frank Sinatra. We're big fans of an old band called Northstar, so that comes through in a lot of our writing. Some of our songs also ended up in the vein of Taking Back Sunday and Spitalfield. When we started this band, we wanted to make music that wasn't limited to a specific genre. We just set our sights on becoming a rock band. Sometimes we come up with heavier things, other times it's more on the poppy side. Depends on the day. 

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Music is really awesome in that you can connect to so many different people. I would love to get to the point where as many people as possible are shouting the words back at us. We're looking to play out more often, then record a studio album in the future. All of us write because it's what we love to do, and I guess you could say we want people to share that energy and emotion we put into our songs. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

The highlight of our career had to be winning a battle of the bands, and playing our date of Warped Tour in 2012. There's something very poetic about all these different people gathering in one place to listen to music. Because Warped is one of the biggest festivals around, it offers you a unique chance to make new friends, meet diverse listeners, and play in front of a different crowd. We'd love to put more highlights under our belt, but we haven't been around the block all that long. Hearing our songs played on a radio show was neat. Note to self: earn more highlights. 

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

There was this one summer party where mysterious bottles were opened on pool decks...

If you were asked to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Honorable mention goes to "If I Ever", which has the most history behind it in my opinion. We locked ourselves in a studio until around 4am recording the instrumentals, and I also have the clearest memories of writing lyrics to it. But, I think the winner goes to a new song we haven't recorded yet, tentatively called "And There It Is". I'm excited to release it because it's a powerful song and speaks for what we're trying to do.
