We’re nice guys, I think. We’re ok at playing music too, so that’s alright. We play a bit of modern rock mixed with the tiniest hint of pop.

Tom Petty, Powderfinger, Prince, John Bonham’s right foot, anyone in-tune...

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Just to be able to have it as a full time job would be epic! Hopefully people like it along the way too.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Finishing "Whatever You Do, Don’t", because it took three years and we FINALLY did it.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

When one of Australia’s top radio stations were premiering our single and they ended up playing a Nine Inch Nails song by mistake… And it wasn’t a GOOD Nine Inch Nails song.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Probably Coming Home. It’s an honest rock song tackling the real life issue of PTSD. We came up with it as a band and it’s my personal favourite on the record.

Where are you from?

How would you describe yourselves and your music?

Musically I would say we are a progressive rock band that love to be loud and punchy but then also melodic in a way that we will stay in your head forever. As a group of guys we are all fun and energetic, always looking for ways to stir one another up for a laugh and maintain our strong camaraderie.    

Who are your main influences musically?

The biggest two are definitely Karnivool and The Butterfly Effect. Whenever we hear or talk about their songs the conversations last for ages and often turn into Shaun bringing up a video of them on YouTube mid rehearsal then realising 20 minutes have passed by.  

What do you hope to achieve in music?

To be honest when we became a full line-up it was without any major goals or agendas. Individually we each just wanted to have some fun playing and collaborating with strangers, and seeing what sort of relationship and sound we would build together. Once we knew we were clicking together and decided to hit the recording studio, it became a bit more results focused. Even still the main desire is to just play music with one another and have fun with it. It would be nice to reinvigorate the prog rock scene in Oz and give a different taste and feel to the genre, but so long as we are having fun and people are digging the sound we don’t mind where it takes us. 

What has been the highlight of you career so far?

Definitely the EP release. Whilst we have all been in other music scenes and bands, I myself never had the chance to take it to a recording studio and experience the actual printing of something with my name on it, so I’m very excited and happy to have done it in a genre that I hadn’t participated in before. And also do it with some great blokes.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Having just shared my excitement at being in a studio for the first time it’s probably also something that caused the most stress, and at times made us experience each other’s limits for the first time as well. Whilst it was an amazing process and 99% of it was incredibly fun, that 1% was enough to make us realise that next time we hit the studio it will be with a different and more organised approach.  

If you had to pick one song to represent your music what would it be and why?

Definitely Fire. When describing the band we say loud and punchy but also soft and melodic. Well, that describes Fire. It’s certainly the song that helped us find our sound and direction for the future.

We are a socially, politically and spiritually charged group on our own separate life journeys meeting in the middle with our individual experience, influence and knowledge to create music that makes us inspired.

Kendric Lamar, Gill Scott-heron, Pearl Jam, Sting, Jeff Beck, NWA, Limp Bizkit.

What do you hope to achieve in music? 

To create a vast body of work that reaches out and moves a vast network of people. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

When on tour we hear unfamiliar faces singing along to songs we have created together. That's an indescribable vibe. 

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Every 'bad' experience leaves room to learn and improve. There are a few things that we would probably have done differently now, but unless we'd have messed up in the first place may still not know. A lot of the worst decisions turn out to be the best songs. 

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Each new piece of work we create we feel as though it's the best thing we've done. I think that's a common trend with musicians/ artists etc. the last thing you've made is the benchmark of where your head is at, even if the next thing sounds completely different, and with us it does tend to. We pool our influences from very wide reach so often when we land in the middle it can be pretty out there. That is why it is important to us to be releasing as much material as we possibly can to paint as detailed a picture of the scope of what we are trying to represent. The latest thing we have put down on record is a song called Fever.

How would you describe you and your music?

Indie-inspired, alternatively produced folk singer/songwriter. Or alternative indie folk.

Who are your main influences musically?

Matt Corby, James Vincent Mcmorrow, Dry the River.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

I haven’t set myself an ultimate goal. As if I get there, the euphoria will expire and I will set myself another goal for the future and will always aspire to be more. And if I don’t get there then I will deem myself a disappointment and curse myself for trying, so rather I am happy with how things are going, and hope for good things to follow.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Playing at Glastonbury 14 with Freddie Vernon and Co was amazing. As far as my solo career goes it would have to be headlining The Fleece in Bristol.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Hmm, that’s a tough question. Embarrassment never killed anyone so I don’t cringe at my past embarrassing moments too much. Most things in the past are best left in the past, otherwise we forget about the task at hand. Though there are things I wish I could un-see, like Hong Kong market place practises.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Probably Crimson Charcoal which hasn’t been released yet. It has delicate instrumentals and a heavy hitting chorus with a message that means a lot to me, and is probably the most real topic of all my songs. The song just came together both when I was writing it and recording it really nicely and how I hoped.

How would you describe yourselves and your music? 

We're an independent band, described as indie electronic. Our music is 'big' sounding, with dramatic dark chords, dynamic changes and it aims to take its listeners on a journey.

Who are your main influences musically? 

We draw upon a lot of influences. Being both 80s babies, we love the electronic sounds of The Divinyls, Stevie Nicks, Phil Collins, along with more modern influences of Tame Impala, The Jezabels, Radiohead and The Midnight Juggernauts

What do you hope to achieve in music? 

Our aim is to record music that moves people, that reaches out and signifies that people are not alone, that we're all connected. We hope to meet all the wonderful supporters we have worldwide through traveling the world and performing internationally. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why? 

Big highlights for us were being invited to perform at two international music festivals in 2014. We performed at Indie Week in Toronto, Canada, and Youbloom Music Festival in LA. 

And what’s the moment you want to forget? 

In 2014 we were in our rehearsal studio when we were notified that our friend, who was for all intents and purposes our brother, had passed away. That is a moment we would definitely like to forget. 

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why? 

Our current single Mayfair would be the song that best represents our music. It is anthemic, dynamic, and it builds up over the course of the song both in angst and sonic layering.

We are based in Sydney, Australia

We have Chrissy as our vocalist, Dre and Steve on guitars, and Andy on bass.

How would you describe yourselves?

Coming from a wide range of musical backgrounds we have managed to find a musical middle ground towards the heavier end of the pop punk genre.

Who are your main influences musically?

Chrissy's latest tattoo goes to show one of our main influences is A Day To Remember. Other influences include Paramore and Halestorm, although each individual band member brings influence from their own personal musical experiences and this could range from the likes of Fleetwood Mac to artists such as Flume.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

It would be quicker to list the things we hope not to achieve. Our goal in this band is to constantly compete and do better than we have previously done. Of course we would love to be the next biggest thing and international superstars, however I have a more important goal in mind when I pick up a guitar to start writing a new song. When we were young we all heard songs that changed our lives and as we are older and realize the world isn't all rainbows and flying around on the backs of magical unicorns, we want to provide some sort of distraction through entertainment and allow people to just enjoy themselves for a while. We only sing about experiences we've been through and hopefully people can relate to these ideas.

What has been the highlight of your music career and why?

The highlight of our music career has been the incredible response we have had to our song Feel That Way. We were overwhelmed with the feedback we got and where we were getting it from! Places in Europe and America were not only listening but recommending other listen to it. Still boggles my mind that a song written and recorded in Dre's living room, independent of anyone external to the band has already reached so many people. 

If you had to choose just one of your songs to represent you music, what would it be and why?

Feel that Way takes the cake on this one! This song has a taste of all the genres you are likely encounter through our up and coming EP, from a post chorus breakdown to flowing melodies through the outro its a true representation of the music we love to listen to.

Bare Island Q&A

I'm a solo producer.

How would you describe yourselves?

I'm a guy who simply cannot believe the possibilities technology now offers the home producer. I have a very humble project studio that major artists could only have dreamed about prior to the 70s, in some ways at least. I want to explore it!

Who are your main influences musically?

With Bare Island I am trying to capture something dreamlike. It's a distant impression of how music sounded around the late 70s and early 80s, with the explosion of punk, glam and new wave. I don't think my music sounds like anything from that era, it sounds like my nostalgia for it, when I'm relaxed and reflective, and that's what I'm trying to convey. I think perhaps Burial works like this, almost painting an impression of another style of music from another time.

The most common comparisons I hear are to artists like Massive Attack, Sigor Ros, Cocteau Twins and other 4AD acts. They are certainly artists who have influenced me and I'm happy to be compared to them.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

I hope to build an audience that enjoys my music as much as I do, and that inspires me to keep creating.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

I think the release of 'Night Songs'. I learned so much making this EP. About 2 months before release I realised I didn't know enough about mixing to really do the work justice, so I got hold of a couple of great books and just buried myself in audio engineering. The change in the sound I was producing was staggering, and I think 'Night Songs' is a big milestone, one I intend to build upon.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

If we go back to my live career with a number of Oz bands, I very distinctly remember one night we were setting up for a pretty big gig, and all the electronic drums were programmed and saved onto a little Yamaha midi box. I tried to load up the opening tracks and got a disk error. We had to cancel the gig! Always back up, kids!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

I think 'Almost Gone' is quite representative, it has a great sense of space and a little drama.

How would you describe yourselves?
By combining gut-wrenching drums, loud guitars, heart-stringing vocals, and words that speak truth, Bonney Read reveals and celebrates the dramas surrounding the sheer bliss and bogus of youth, angst, stupidity, true friendship, and the ridiculous obsession with love. They are your alter egos, and they’re bringing back Attitude to rock.

Who are your main influences musically?
We have eclectic tastes, from Motown to metal and prog to pop, but there's no doubt we've been heavily influenced by artists like Pat Benatar, Pink, Paramore, Rage Against the Machine and Muse. 

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We want to create a song that becomes a part of the soundtrack of someone's life. You know, when you hear a song and you're instantly taken back to the summer of 2009, or that breakup that changed your life? If we can write that song, then our musical journey will be absolutely priceless. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I'm sure we all have different ones, but the first thing that comes to mind is the success of our recent crowd funding campaign. We set out with an audacious goal of raising $5000 to record an album, and to be honest we didn't know what would happen. With the support of our amazing fans, we not only hit the target, we surpassed it by hundreds of dollars, and the encouragement we received from unexpected places was unbelievable! We we're greatly inspired to keep creating and playing. 

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
The band has been through a few acrimonious line-up changes since its conception. All have shaped the band into its current form, though some would be OK to forget. 

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Our sound is maturing and changing a fair bit, so I'd like to pick two songs- one from the past and one from the future: 
1. Hands - lyrically and musically it is our heart on our sleeve
2. Lust - heavy hitting riffs and feel changes combined with soaring melodies, it is a taste of our future writing.

Eliza Jaye to deliver debut album later this month

AUSSIE Eliza Jaye will release her debut album The Seed on July 26th.

Her first single Black Heart Rum was released back in September 2011 and it - and its three follow up tracks since - have been picked up by stations across the UK including tastemasters Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson.

The album has taken stylistic ideas from blues, punk and rock and features Eliza on guitar and vocals and features her sister Anna (Bat For Lashes, British Sea Power) on violin.

She will be playing a launch gig at The Ranelagh in her adopted UK home of Brighton.

Jagwar Ma to tour in UK

AUSSIE duo Jagwar Ma head to the UK in October for a tour after their run of festivals including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and Bestival.

Dates at London's XOYO and The Deaf Institute in Manchester in June have already sold out, but fans without a ticket for those gigs will be able to see them later in the year.

Jagwar Ma emerged last year with the captivating single 'Come Save Me'. Where are you from? 
We're from Sydney, Australia!

Scarlet Chase.

Who else is in your band? 
We have the wonderful Chrissy McHugh on pipes, Matt Thornton working the sleazy baselines and myself on six strings of hell and skins in the studio! Depending on the time and place, we have a few drummers that work with us depending on the situation. This always keeps us on our feet! 

How would you describe yourselves? 
There's one line that has summed us up from the very beginning and that's ‘Hard Rock branded with a liberal smattering of badass attitude!’ and we remind ourselves of this everyday! 

Who are your main influences musically? 
We all have a variety of influences, some in common, some very far from the norm, but when it comes to Scarlet Chase our biggest influences are each other and that keeps 'the motor oiled'. There's nothing more inspiring than hearing a rockin' bass-line come out of Matt's hands or a twisted tale on pipes that sends shivers down your spine from Chrissy! 

What do you hope to achieve in music? 
It's going to sound super cheesy but to us it's all ‘music and family’, and by family we mean the fans, the supporters, the radio stations, the journalists, the bloggers, the people listening to Scarlet Chase! It's really important to us to build a relationship with each and every fan, we spend a huge amount of time online and off getting to know everyone and we've made a lot of cool friends. So I guess to answer what we want to achieve in music, it's simple: we want to create an experience, an opportunity that will bring everyone together! We want to meet each and every Scarlet Chase fan and everyone who is helping out! In a way you can think of it as one really large dysfunctional rockin' family! 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why? To us, it's putting in the hard work and seeing people enjoy it! There are definitely a few smiles from us whenever we notice a few random Scarlet Chase fans from across the globe become friends through their mutual relationship with us. Ha, again. Super-Cheese-Supreme! 

And what’s the moment you want to forget? 
There isn't one! It's all about learning from mistakes and being on the same page. Whenever there's a slight problem, we think quick and get ourselves through it! We celebrate the bad times as much as the good times! 

If you could choose one of your songs as an advert for your music, what would it be and why? 
We've always felt ‘Like it Rough’ sums us up. We're not some female fronted pop band, we like our music and our shows rough and messy and we all have our own translation of what ‘Like it Rough’ is. In a way it's actually about our own motivation we bring to Scarlet Chase.
