Brooklyn Doran Q&A

Your name:
Brooklyn Doran.

Where are you from?
I’m from Canada. My hometown is Kenora, Ontario but now I live in Toronto.

Who else is in your band?
I’m a singer-songwriter so I sing solo quite a bit. I also play with a full band for larger shows, usually comprised of:
Aaron Corbett (guitar and sometimes accordion)
Mike Tudisco (keys & percussion)
Erik Lindemann (upright bass)
Adam Faux (electric guitar)
Jon Foster (drums).

How would you describe yourself and your music?
Honest, lyrical.

Who are your main influences musically?
There are many singer-songwriters whose lyrics influence me greatly: Sufjan Stevens, Elena Tonra (Daughter), Feist and Sarah Harmer to name a few.
I’m also really interested in the work of my fellow emerging artists in the Canadian music scene too. For example, Crooked House Road is a gorgeous-sounding folk band making waves right now. They are hosting a benefit concert series at 3030, which is a pretty awesome local music venue in the city and they’re using their music to support local charities. Shaina Silver-Baird is a powerhouse vocalist, and guitarist/vocalist Mirian Kay also has a solo project that I’m really into. Every time I hear them play, I just want to go home and write.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I’m hoping to continue to grow my sound both in recorded work and in my live show. I have some plans in the works for touring as well.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Releasing my first EP “There’s A Light On” is definitely one of my fondest memories in music to date. The release show was on my birthday and I played to a sold out crowd that all sang the lyrics to my songs back at me.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Singing a break-up tune with the person who it was about in the audience.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
“There’s A Light On (Kitchen Song)” because its sweet and upbeat, but still ultimately about inviting a special someone to spend the night.
