shotty Q&A

Your name:
My name is Pat.

Where are you from?
I'm from Seattle, WA. (Well, Kirkland actually).

Name of band:
shotty.

Who else is in your band?
Miles Frank on drums, and Duffey Westlake on bass & keys.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?
We're all pretty quiet guys. We love tea, and video games, and puns. Beneath it all is an awkward nerdy sparkle-angst that sizzles up from time to time. We channel this into our music and stage personas, where melodramatic rock riffs meet sci-fi retro videogame garage pop. We write from our hearts, and when in doubt (which is often) we rock out. I think our music is polarizing in its irreverent youthfulness. We care about what we care about, we love the music we love, and maybe sometimes we turn up our amps a bit too loud.

Who are your main influences musically?
Our musical influences vary. I (Pat) am partial to metal, pop, Norwegian hard rock, N64 music, Queen, and complete silence. Miles like Rush, fast metal drumming, and Cat Stevens. Duffey just seems to like everything, I swear he keeps inventing obscure 90's bands.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I focus less on what I hope to achieve with music, and more on what I achieve on a daily basis. The world is weird, it doesn't make sense. The more emotions I feel, the stranger everything gets. There are only more questions, never any answers. Then I write a song, put it into words, and we play it really loud in our little music cave, with Pokemon posters on the wall. Then everything makes sense. In the long run? I would like to achieve bigger Pokemon posters, bigger music rooms, and probably some fame and fortune too.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We've lost a few battles of the bands. Those are always fun! We never really feel like a band, and then we show up with our gear and play with all these cool band dudes, and we lose. It's pretty neat. But we always, ALWAYS, blow people's minds. That's what it's all about. People get really excited when we play, like it's time to wake up and enjoy themselves. Other highlights include moving to LA, signing with Cautionary Tail Records, releasing our awesome music videos, touring the West Coast, playing a New York fashion week showcase event, and locking ourselves in the studio to record an AMAZING upcoming EP.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Why would I want to forget anything? It's just been a bunch of learning experiences. My wallet getting stolen at a show, my front teeth getting knocked out at a show, our ex-manager slipping us notes to "pick up the tempo" during a show when Miles was in the midst of a really bad flu and barely able to lift his drumsticks. Those are all great life lessons. I'm sure that once we're rock stars we'll have the exact same issues, but BIGGER and more visible and probably a million times more stressful. Bring it on!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Goodnight. It rocks when it rocks, it's pretty when it's pretty, it's dancey when it's dancey.  It's got guitars, piano, harmonies, irony, death metaphors, all of it. The only thing it doesn't have much of is humor. You have to imagine that part.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your music that I forgot to ask?
Music is the best ^_^ We're almost done recording our new EP, which is the best new EP we've ever been almost done recording. I love these songs so much, and I'm sure you'll love them too.
