Title track video from Harper

ALT-pop songstress Harper has unveiled the video for Velvet - the title track from her debut EP.

The video was directed by Ben Newbury, whose previous credits include Ellie Goulding's Beating Heart and has worked with the likes of Laurel, UNKLE and Dan Croll.

The Velvet EP was produced by East London-based Harper herself with help from ICU Label head Elliott Govinden and production team Eagleye.

Debut EP from Harper

HARPER has released her debut EP The Velvet via the ICU label.

It's accompanied by the release of the title track and follows her debut track Island.

Harper - aka Bristol-born, Welsh-raised and London-based Sam Harper - has spent most of the last year writing, recording and developing her sound.

The EP was produced with the help of ICU boss Elliott Govinden and Eagle Eye duo Day Djan Jr and Ashton Foster (Little Mix, Pixie Lott, Conor Maynard).

Debut track from Harper

ALT-pop singer Harper has released her debut track Island taken from forthcoming EP The Velvet, out on August 4th.

Harper - aka Sam Harper - was born in Bristol, mainly brought up in Wales and now lives in East London.

Her EP was produced by Eagleeye, who have worked with Little Mix, Pixie Lott and Conor Maynard.

Harper stream new EP Mono No Aware

ALT-rock four-piece Harper are streaming their new EP Mono No Aware ahead of its release.

The London/Essex outfit recorded the EP earlier this year at Shelter Studio in Dalston and was produced by Dominic Rippel.

Matt from the band gave RealSoundsOK a track-by-track run down of Mono No Aware, as follows...

Cast in Stone - This song came together pretty organically, and when we were discussing the tracks we wanted to record, we knew we had to have this in there, and it had to be the opening track. 

Eastern Road Dance - The oldest song on there, but also one of our favourites. We tried experimenting with different textures and vocal harmonies. Our producer was great when it came to this, he really encouraged a lot of experimentation that has ended up on the E.P. Even though it's probably the oldest song we play live now, the outcome of its recording has breathed a new life into it. A good driving song, or so the boys in the band that can drive tell me.

Bringing Me Down - This song is again, a lot of fun to play. Unlike the first two tracks, which are us kind of presenting a new world of ours, Bringing Me Down is a bit more straight forward. We wanted to incorporate some classic song structures but give those structures our own feel, keeping it heavy, but a bit more danc-ey perhaps.

Ligature - Probably our most far out song, and definitely one that shows what we're about in the studio. It's a difficult one to pull off live. But that's not to say it lacks anything, if anything we knew we wanted this to end the E.P, and show our progression throughout the 15 minutes that make up Mono No Aware. When Jam was recording his bass part, we knew we were onto something. It's a real show-piece of the rhythm section in the band.

Who else is in your band?

Toby Thacker - Drums/Percussion

How would you describe yourselves?

Blues/alternative rock band formed in early 2013 in the nether regions between East London and Essex. 

Who are your main influences musically?

Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, Jack White (And accompanying side projects - The Dead Weather in particular).

What do you hope to achieve in music?

We'd really like to be able to do it as long as possible, becoming a formidable band both in the studio as well as on stage. Creatively, we're always looking to try new things, so one thing we hope to not achieve is repetition. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

I guess the release of our latest single, Feel So Hollow (Out 25th November 2013). The reaction to that so far has been great. We recorded it and produced it ourselves and to have had such a great response thus far is really amazing. 

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

Honestly, there hasn't been one. Sure, there have been a few gigs that could have gone better, but there's not been a blip since Jamie and Toby joined back in Spring 2013. 

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Feel So Hollow - It's our latest single and the best representation of our sound. It's dark, it's bluesy, and the groove is sure to get you on your feet.
