Colin's Godson Q&A

Your name:
Joseph Greatorex.

Where are you from?
Glasgow, Scotland.

Name of band:
Colin's Godson.

Who else is in your band?
Joseph Greatorex (vocals/guitar/bass/synths), James McColl (guitar/vocals), Dave Gillies (keyboards), Tommy Duffin (drums), Ed Bowman (guitar/ vocals (Studio Only), Geoffrey MacKenzie (Bass (live only)).

How would you describe yourselves?
We're a guitar pop band with a punky edge which is being gradually sanded down over time.

Who are your main influences musically?
We listen to a lot different types of music which hopefully comes across in our stuff but our main influences are 60’s pop, 70's Glam, 80's Britpunk and 90's Britpop.
If you had to single out a top five of artists who are the most direct influences on us I would probably say Frank Sidebottom, Jilted John, The Sultans of Ping f.c., Kinky Machine and Queen.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I suppose we'd really love to release our records and play some gigs overseas, especially in Japan and North America. It would be interesting to see what the reaction to us over there was.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We recorded an album called ‘Colin's Godson in Space’ this year which got a lot of really good reviews. So the highlight so far was the universal critical acclaim which that album was met. If anyone reading this wants to burst that bubble please feel free to give it a bad review.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Some of our early gigs were a bit ropey, we were friends with a promoter and we were often called in at the last minute to replace bands who had failed to turn up. Obviously we hadn't rehearsed and we would just get stuck into the free beers/ wine before the show and mistakes would be many. Don't really think anyone noticed that much but I always like things to sound like they are meant too.

If you could choose one of your songs as an advert for your music, what would it be and why?
There’s a song on our new EP called ‘Stadium Rock’ which I think sums up where we're at musically and lyrically at the moment. It's a stadium rock song that deconstructs and pokes fun at stadium rock so it's basically us having our cake and eating it.

Where can we listen to it?
