Carmen
Toth (singer/songwriter/guitar & keys player for Social Potion).
Where
are you from?
Toronto
(East York), Ontario, Canada.
Name of band:
Social
Potion.
Who else is in
your band?
My
husband Aaron Jones. We're a married couple duo. He plays drums, keyboard and
sometimes guitar. I do vocals, guitar, keyboard and most of the songwriting. I
also play solo under my own name (Carmen Toth).
How would you
describe yourselves?
Original
indie alt-pop that reaches your soul. We're often compared to 80s and 90s era
artists.
Who are your
main influences musically?
Some
of our favourites are Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Tom
Petty, Peter Gabriel, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Death Cab For Cutie and The
Silversun Pickups. We listen to a lot of classic rock, indie rock and retro
70s/80s/90s music.
What do you hope
to achieve in music?
We
hope to gain enough fans to make a living doing what we love for a long time.
So more shows and an eventual tour, more albums (we currently have an EP), more
music videos, more airplay and song placements on movie or TV show soundtracks.
If we can achieve those things, that would make us extremely happy.
What has been
the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Getting
selected to play in this year's NXNE (North By North East) Music & Film
Festival was pretty awesome. It's one of the biggest music festivals in
Canada.
And what’s the
moment you want to forget?
For
a short while Aaron and I tried playing with two other people in our band and
it didn't work out. We had to say goodbye to them. It was really tough on
everyone. But a great learning experience for sure. It made Aaron and I
appreciate each other more as artists, and made us more sure of the sound we're
going for.
If you could
choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and
why?
Probably
"Drive Myself Home." It's catchy and has lyrics that a lot people can
relate to.
Where can we
listen to it?
Where can we
find out more about your music?
Anything else
you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
We'd just like to thank our fans for their encouragement and support.
You guys are awesome! Also, our 5-song debut EP is available as a FREE download
at socialpotion.ca. (But you can also buy it if you want -- we'll love you
either way!)
