The Hudson Super 6 Q&A

Your name:
Phil Wagg.

Where are you from?
Derby, UK.

Name of band:
The Hudson Super 6.

Who is in your band?
Phil Wagg - eulogy, oscillator. Pete Darrington - siren, subsonics. Andrew Payne - chromatic analyst. Simon Jones - rhythm architect.

How would you describe yourselves?
The Hudson Super Six play Bluespunkrockmetal’n’roll – the soundtrack to all your dirty secrets. Formed out of the twisted wreckage of three of Derby's most successful bands Cable, Scribble and Iris.

Who are your main influences musically?
Pixies, QOTSA, Foo Fighters, ZZ Top, AC-DC, Led zeppelin, Otis Redding, James Brown, George Clinton.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We’d all love to be able to quit our day jobs and become full time at this of course (baby steps!). It might sound boring, but we’d just love to be able to do this for a living. Travel the world, playing gigs in all sorts of weird and wonderful places. Meeting all the crazy music lovers of the world and having fun. And ultimately write better songs. We obviously have a high opinion of ourselves (you have to to deal with all of the rejection!), but we can always be better. Is there such a thing as that perfect song? Maybe not, but we are trying to write it and won’t stop until we have.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
So, so many over the years. Recording in New York, playing SXSW, meeting and supporting some of our heroes etc. Recent highs have been playing the Camden Rocks Festival at a really great little venue in June this year (picture included, the one with the red curtain in the background) and also headlining the Allotment Stage at last year’s Y-NOT festival (all pictured). Gigs are usually the highlights that make all the horror worth while!

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Ha! Very recent. Our practice room was broken into at the end of July ‘13. Ten Guitars were stolen in total and so far we have only recover four. Soul destroying as we have had some of those pieces for +10 years and they are the basis of our sound. But we’re working our way through it! What doesn’t kill you......

If you had to choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
We’re working on some new songs now and one or two of them are becoming awesome TBH. Not recorded yet, so a pretty redundant comment! Off our debut album, This Black Heart Beats Faster Than Yours, I guess we’d say the song Heartbreakin’ (can be streamed with two other songs at the below link). It kind of embodies what we are trying to do i.e. it rocks in the traditional sense of rock n roll, but without becoming some sort of pastiche or ‘tribute’ to the 1970s or something! This is kind of what we are trying to do, create good old fashioned rock n roll but that fits in today, that takes all of those great rock and indie bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s and adds them to the classic ‘70s origin mix.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say that I forgot to ask?
Our debut album was released in three parts over the last 18 months. This Black Heart Beats Faster Than Yours, Part 3 was released in April ‘13 and all are available to download at all good online retailers.
