Tom Mitchell Q&A

Your name:
Tom Mitchell.

Where are you from?
Bristol, UK.

Name of band:
Tom Mitchell

Who else is in your band?
I regularly perform with my collaborator Sarah Proudfoot.

How would you describe yourselves?
Through my music I aim to conjure up a 60s folk reminiscence. Primarily acoustically driven, I try to make my songs atmospheric and melodic with a strong emphasis on finger-style guitar work and gentle harmonies.

Who are your main influences musically?
Mark Knopfler has always been my primary inspiration when it comes to playing the guitar. When it comes to songwriting and singing, I get a lot of influence from Simon & Garfunkel and Elliott Smith.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I love performing and writing more than anything (other than my family!) and so long as I have time to do so amongst the essential things like changing nappies then I'm happy. I've had a couple of frustrating experiences with the music industry which have actually been beneficial in the sense that I'm no longer rushing to get my stuff out there or push it with great fervour...I just want to play my songs to people and if they enjoy them - wonderful!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Releasing my debut solo album 'New World' in 2013 was a very satisfying achievement and was the pinnacle of a lot of work. A year of playing guitar for Duffy was also a great experience. I also proposed to my fiancee Kerry on stage mid-gig at the Fleece in Bristol to a packed crowd.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Falling off the back off the stage while performing with the Cadbury Sisters in 2011. The stool I was sat on was just a little too close to the edge and one particularly bassy moment saw me topple off. The girls were unaware of my predicament however as I managed to finish the song whilst suspended horizontally by various wires and cables.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Michael's Garden - atmospheric, personal, melodic and (hopefully) catchy.
