Flamingo Bay Q&A

Your name:
Kris Gies (the bass/vocals).

Where are you from?

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta. Moved out to Ontario with Dillon (guitar/vocals) in 2012. Now residing in Hamilton.

Name of band:

Flamingo Bay.

Who else is in your band?

Dillon Henningson and Vince Rankin (drums/vocals).

How would you describe yourselves?

Northern swamp rock. Recently were called grungy slacker pop...I like that one too.

Who are your main influences musically?

Tom Petty - he and his crew know how to throw a tune together. Queens of the Stone Age - bad ass, creative, heavy and popular. That's a tricky combination to figure out.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

Full time work!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Any time we play live and everyone in the room is feelin it. Doesn't matter the size of the room or how many people are in there. When everyone is feelin it together...that's what it's all about. We hope to be the party leaders if nothing else. Then getting paid for that? I feel like we're robbing the place...

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

When the bar staff left the bar while we were on stage because the only person in the building that wasn't on stage was the grumpy sound guy. Although I wouldn't want to forget that...it's funny to think about now.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

Tough call but off the new record I'd say Checkout Line. It's pure rock but with some western vibes. From our last record I'd say Serpentine. That was one of the first tunes we ever played together and it still sounds great every time....most times anyway.

Where can we listen to it?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band/music that I forgot to ask?

At the end of the day we're doing this because its the most fun thing we can think of doing. Everyone has day-to-day bullshit to deal with. So why not come out to a show, forget about all that for a night and have a damn good time.
