The Spase Q&A

Your names:
Andy Forrest & Peter Walker.

Where are you from?
We're from Halton in northern Cheshire. It's a great location because it's right in the middle of two of the big musical cities in the world; Manchester and Liverpool, so we've got lots of Manc and Scouse influences.

Name of band:
The Spase. We initially called ourselves The Space, but it clashed with too many other bands and organisations, so owe thought the easiest thing to do was to change the spelling of it, after some advice from our record label Canadia Records.

Who else is in your band:
There's just two of us, but we've had help from a few others who have contributed in various ways - we like to call these people 'The Ghosts'.

How would you describe yourselves?
We are an indie/alternative band who have a melodic and poetic style of music. We write songs to tell stories and as a medium to get music out of our heads and into people's ears. It's all relative though, people say we sound like bands such as Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Cure, which surprises us.

Who are your main influences musically?
This could end up being a big list, but to give you the brief list, I'd include; U2, Elvis, James, Foo Fighters, The Beatles, Brendan Benson, KT Tunstall & Marcy Playground.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We are driven to achieve the best we can with the talent we've been given, whatever that might be. It might be playing in front of 50 people or it might be playing in front of 5,000 people. I suppose we just don't want to leave this place with any regrets basically. We also want to keep making music that we enjoy, if other people happen to enjoy that too, that that's brilliant.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We played on the same bill as The Zutons at the Zanzibar, in Liverpool. It was a packed night and we all know what happened to them after that. The Zanzibar obviously thought we were good enough to play with The Zutons, that was pretty good. We only formed in October 2012 and we've already got ourselves on BritRockArmy's compilation album which is due to be released in March 2013.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Getting double booked in a local pub with chilli night. We can laugh about it now!

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
'White hits blue' - It shows off our melodic style, we feel it has good lyrics and has meaning embedded in it. It has a lot of thought put into it, and yet it's such a simple song, we written it quite quickly.

Where can we listen to it?
You can have a listen to us on our soundcloud page (http://www.soundcloud.com/thespase). We have two demos from our soon to be released album 'On a cloud' - which are; 'The Shooting star' & 'Empty lane', as well as other songs, including 'The gypsy and the fool' which will be released on a compilation album released by BritRockArmy in March 2013.

Where can we find out more about your music?
All our links can be found on our website (http://www.thespase.co.uk), but you can find us on Soundcloud (http://www.soundcloud.com/thespase), Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/musicbythespase), Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/thespase) and on Youtube too (http://www.youtube.com/thespasetv).

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
We have an album due out this year, which is currently at the mixing stage. It will be called 'On a cloud' and will be a mixture of indie rock and alternative acoustic style songs. 'On a cloud' will be released by our record label - Canadia Records in spring/summer 2013.
