They Will Fall Q&A

Your name:
Austin Knies. I'm the lead vocalist in the band.

Where are you from?
Right now, we're based out of West Monroe, Louisiana, US.

Name of band:
They Will Fall.

Who else is in your band?
Chris Shifflett, the drummer; Derek Deutsch, who plays bass and sings; Corey McKnight, guitarist; and Aron Felkins, guitarist.

How would you describe yourselves?
I hope that when people listen to us or see us at shows, they hear and see passion, honesty, humility, and maturity in us. We definitely come up short in all those areas, but that's how I would describe our band. We're a group of determined young men, that's for sure. Haha.

Who are your main influences musically?
We definitely draw influence from many different places. Vocally, we draw a lot of influence from bands like The Devil Wears Prada, La Dispute, Mouth of the South, Oh Sleeper, and Memphis May Fire. Instrumentally, however, we draw influence from bands like Erra, Being As An Ocean, Gideon, Fit For a King, and Architects. These bands have a lot of different unique characteristics about them that we try to learn from and incorporate into our music, whether it be hardcore or metalcore or spoken word or whatever genre.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
As a band, our goal is to spread the love and truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We're very aware that this sounds rather cliché, but we hope to break the hypocritical, lackluster stereotype that most "Christian" bands seem to fit into. We're serious about our faith, and if you don't agree with us, that's totally cool. Our job is not to convert a bunch of people. We don't have the power to do that. The only thing we can do is to live and love like Christ would and tell people what we believe to be the ultimate truth. We love to meet new people and make relationships, and hopefully through talking to people, we display our faith in Christ as best we can. We'll love on people, whether they agree or disagree with what we stand for.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I'm not sure if I'm speaking for the rest of the band, but for me personally, the highlight of my time in the band was at this one specific show we played in Pineville, Louisiana. A really popular all-age venue called Ursa Major was hosting its last show ever that night because it was closing down, and so many people came to that show to watch the bands... When we finally went on, there was just such a large number of people packed into that room...The pit was huge. I'll never forget how intimate that show was. That show was the show that made me believe that They Will Fall could really make it.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
This question definitely sparked a few moments in my head that I'd like to forget.. haha! There were certain shows we played in the early days of the band that were really corny and not put together well. We played many performances that you can still find on YouTube probably, where the songs were incomplete or our stage presence was just awful. It's hard to go back and watch these videos; there is just so much that we would like to change. However, I'd lie to you if I said that they weren't necessary, because we wouldn't have progressed as a band and as musicians if it wasn't for those moments. They might have been embarrassing, but they led to who we are as a band today, and because of that reason, we need not to forget them but learn from them instead.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Right now, we have this song out called "How Many Is a Brazilian?". Disregarding the stupid name, I'd pick that to represent our music because I think it best demonstrates our lyrical and instrumental maturity as musicians. In my opinion, it's our best recorded work. However, we are going into the studio on June 2nd to record a new EP entitled "Misconceptions", and I'm really stoked about every single song. We put our best efforts into writing every one of them and I'm absolutely satisfied with each one. Once that EP comes out late this summer, I'd rather anyone who is interested in our music listen to that instead of our first album.

Where can we listen to it?
Here's a YouTube video of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqRA4Vqqol4

Where can we find out more about your music?
Well, you can find us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/theywillfall) and Twitter (@TheyWillFall), and you can find our first album "Disrupt the World" on iTunes, Spotify, CDBaby, last.fm, Google Play, AmazonMP3, YouTube, and I'm sure you can download it illegally if you search us on Google, but please don't do that. haha.

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
Not really haha! We just love to meet and talk to new people, so either come see us at a show or go find us on Facebook or Twitter and get to know us! Also, thanks for reading this interview!
