Gates release single Low ahead of album launch

POST rock outfit Gates have debuted their new single Low from the album Bloom & Breathe, out on October 20th via Pure Noise Records.

Kevin Dye from the New Jersey band told RealSoundsOK: "Nothing about the way this song was written was typical for us. Dan really ended up leading the structure of this song with the beat, which was the spirit of the original idea.

"We were tired of piecing parts together at the time, and the chorus was written around the vocal melody which is unusual for us as well. Lyrically, the more I edited this song, the less I liked it, and I ended up keeping the original draft which I’ve never done.

"We’re all very proud of the way it came together in the end and is one of our collective favourite tracks on the album."

Blue Cougars Q&A

Your name:
Erin.

Where are you from?

From the bushes outside of Ottawa, now from Toronto.

Name of band:

Blue Cougars. I came up with that name when I was seven with my best friend at the time. It stuck and so did the logo.

Who else is in your band?

Nick (guitaring) and AJ (drumming).

How would you describe yourselves?

I've heard us described as "lofi psych-pop". Our approach is to approximate the music experience as a teenager when things are exciting, if not a bit budget. DIY. The feeling of getting a mix tape in the mail from a pen pal.

Who are your main influences musically?

I suppose early 90s grunge and late 90s electronic. Archers of Loaf and Portishead.

What do you hope to achieve in music?

I just want to make the music exactly what it should be and if some other people like it - bonus!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?

Actually finishing an album! It was a large endeavour and I'm proud of how it turned out. We were also lucky enough to have some friends whose music we love, remix a couple songs (Tim Condon of Fresh Snow and TK Dallman of Make Haste, both of which can be found free on our bandcamp). Either that or playing Swine-Fest.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?

I wouldn't mind forgetting some elements of Swine-Fest.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?

I think I'd pick Can't You Hear Me Calling. It contains all the essential elements, plus friends seem to like that one.

Project Number 1 Q&A

Your name:
Adam Paget (singer, lead guitar).

Where are you from?
Warrington, Cheshire.

Name of band:
Project Number 1.

Who else is in your band?
Phil Gallagher (lead guitar), Ant Whelan (drums) and David Seed (bass).

How would you describe yourselves?
Experienced indie band playing crisp indie rock with a dark side. Like to drink beer and argue.

Who are your main influences musically?
Pixies, Oasis, Stone Roses, Manic Street Preachers.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We hope to build on our great live shows and fan base by getting signed to a label and recording an album. As long as people enjoy our music that's the main thing, but being on a platform where the most possible people have the chance to hear it would be amazing.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Playing to sell out crowds at Manchester Academy.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
We lost our keyboard player Mark, Phil's brother. He was a massive part of the band and a massive part of our lives.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
My Time, it explains the situation we're in at the moment, it's our time to make it.

Where can we listen to it?

Molecular Voyage Q&A

Name of band:
We are Molecular Voyage.

Where are you from?
Valparaiso, Indiana.

Who else is in your band?
The core of three members is Jeff T, Tommy Ukes, and Tommy Harps.

How would you describe yourselves?
We all been around since the early 70's playing music in some capacity or another. We have played and created music from progressive rock to these days, acoustic lounge and chill. We do small gigs these days playing "speakeasy" music - jazz standards with a folky presentation. We like to use small humble instruments such as harmonicas, glockenspiels, ukuleles, banjos, along with traditional rock instruments. Our recordings are studio recordings with a "live" sound to give them a relaxed feel - like an old pair of blue jeans.

Who are your main influences musically?
We have many, many influences and like most, they change through the years, and even months. If  to pick one person, it would be Taj Mahal for his ability to widen the arena of his traditional blues roots.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We have zero aspirations of making it "big". All of us are a bit disgusted with some aspects of the the modern music scene. What we do like is the ability to easily share music with like minded people who enjoy our art. These days we love to play and create jazzy, bluesy, and loungey tunes.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I would say the highlight has been the establishment of the KOA Lounge - our recording studio where we are free to create whatever we want.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Probably the moments we would like to forget is the MS diagnosis of our harp player and cancer diagnosis of our ukulele/bells/multi instrumentalist. We have had to deal with these inflictions that sometimes get in the way and sometimes make us stronger.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
If I had to pick one song, it probably would be Spanky, an instrumental written by our harp player, but songs like After Your Gone would be a true representation also.

Glitchfield Plaines brings us Romeda Records

THE brains behind experimental electro outfit Glitchfield Plaines has set up his own music label.

Dave Lavery set up Romeda Records at the beginning of the month and already has four other acts on its roster - Hawk Of The Low Hills, apostrophic, Ambrose Chappel and Owlbinos Of Northfield.

He got in touch with RealSoundsOK to tell us all about it.

The artist from Southport, UK, said: "At its core is electronic music, although this is not exclusive. It's purpose is to be a vehicle for assisting our artists to (hopefully) reach a wider audience.

"Two big influences on the label are Warp Records and Ninja Tune. Their origins are genre specific, but as they have grown, so to has the range of musical styles they release. If Romeda could have one per cent of their success we'd be very happy!

"The project is a huge learning curve. We wanted to do things properly and so made sure Romeda is registered with all the right bodies for royalty payments and rights etc. This is a minefield of information and organisations when you're new to it!

"Initially all the releases will be digital and you can find our music worldwide at over 600 download and streaming sites. Physical releases are planned as and when it is possible to do so and we'd like to utilise unique and interesting packaging where cost allows.

"It is just a case of taking things one step at a time, and hopefully the label will begin to take shape. It's still very early days and the focus for now though will be on gathering interest and gaining exposure for the label and artists."

You can find out more at romeda.net and follow them on Twitter @_Romeda - and check out tracks from Hawk Of The Low Hills and apostrophic below.

First EP of trilogy from Rooftop Revolutionaries

ROOFTOP Revolutionaries have released RED, the first EP from their Red, White & Blue trilogy.

They describe themselves as a political hard rock band with their music a medium to fight corruption, to engage through entertainment and to push for change.

Eleanor Goldfield from the LA band told RealSoundsOK: "This is the driving force behind the EP, and particularly the first song Con Artist.

"This song deals with the vapidity of today's mainstream pop culture. Artists are the voice of a generation - and what's our generation saying? Don't stop the party, bitches, hos and beer. Lovely.

"Wrapped in a catchy melody, we digest these empty intellectual calories, socially and personally devolving.

"Not every song, film, picture and poem needs to be about politics or the human condition or social development, but when every creative endeavor focuses on escaping reality instead of engaging with your actual surroundings, you create an apathetic generation that can be molded and dumbed down without fighting back."

Eleanor says it's the job of artists like Rooftop Revolutionaries to evolve society through entertaining and creative means - but feels this generation is failing.

The EP also includes Diamonds ("a straightforward condemnation of organized religion"), Floodlight (a collaboration with Tim Almeida of Native Alien Tribe) and We Will Rock You, a remake of the Queen classic with lyrics to highlight the "corrupt political system we're fighting against".

You can get the EP on iTunes and Amazon and for more on the band visit rooftoprevolutionaries.com

Amber Dee Q&A

Your name:
Amber Dee.

Where are you from?
Currently residing in the beautiful city of Bath, UK.

How would you describe yourself?
Musically? I write in a kind of pop/folk style, my music’s quite chilled out, a bit like me I guess!

Who are your main influences musically?
Ooh, now that’s a tricky one! I like to think rather than just taking influence from one or two artists/bands, I take little bits of inspiration from a lot of them. Fleetwood Mac, Florence & The Machine, Lucy Rose, Findlay, Nina Nesbitt, Lianne La Havas…to name a few. Quite a mix!

What do you hope to achieve in music?
My main goal is to be happy, music makes me happy. So being able to make a living out of music, on whatever scale, is what I’m aiming to do forever and ever…please?

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
The release of my latest EP was pretty special for me. Without a label, management or anything my friends all came together to help me, I had someone doing web design, my other friend produced the whole EP, got a band together, another friend did all the photography for the EP artwork and the event… On the night I could hear people singing along and everyone sat cross legged in front of the stage for an encore, which the venue said had never happened before! It was pretty cool.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
As cheesy as it may sound, I don’t want to forget any of it! Even if things don’t always go to plan, I’ve gotten pretty good at coming up with a rapid plan B!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I think my favourite so far would have to be Panic. I wrote the song about 2 years before recording it, it means a lot to me and I wanted to be sure of it before letting it go!

Where can we listen to it?

Deliah Q&A

Your names:
Michelle Harris (or Shell) and Alex Dopierala (Dop).

Where are you from?
Shell is from Liverpool - Dop is from Nantwich.

Name of band:
DELIAH.

Who else is in your band?
Jack Batchalor (Drummer)
Wana Shibemba (Bassist)
Terrell Pharrell (Keys)

How would you describe yourselves?
Non smokers, dog lovers, and above all GSOH But in term of music we're a contemporary R&B duo, formed at LIPA, so we are unfortunately music students.

Who are your main influences musically?
Amy Winehouse, Frank Ocean.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We really aim to achieve longevity and credibility with our music… Oh and to create some sick choons.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Playing the third year showcase at uni as second years was a pretty good achievement for us. But I think we would have to say the release of our first single Any Last Words. The feedback from this track has been brilliant!

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
We would like to forget the moment Dop's tuner decided to tune everything a semitone higher than its was saying it was… That was an awkward silence.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Any Last Words.

We will be releasing an EP in January along with a video and if anyone would like to catch one of our shows here are the next few

Rosebuddy Q&A

Your name:
Neil Briffett (guitar).

Where are you from?
Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Name of band:
Rosebuddy.

Who else is in your band?
Yuri Mohacsi (bass) and James Misata (drums).

How would you describe yourselves?
Raunchy pop. Melodic bite. We have songs that either tear your head off or weep over your decapitated corpse (often within the same song).

Who are your main influences musically?
So many...a few that come to mind are Husker Du, The Replacements, Buffalo Tom, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Guided by Voices, Uncle Tupelo - a lot of trios, now that we think of it...

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Frankly, we've already achieved it: lasting this long with the urge to continue doing it while accumulating a body of work and getting "better" (whatever one's definition of that happens to be).

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
See above answer.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Anytime that despair, or ego, or judgment, or indifference, stood in the way.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
That's, of course, a hard one to answer. I'm tempted to say "the next one we write for the very same reason" but I'd have to go with Away With Words because it embodies many of the attributes that we value: brevity, economy, melody, attack, surprise and indirection.

Anything else you’d like to say that I forgot to ask?
If we can recommend anything, it's that endurance, often in the face of indifference, is a central attribute. As a wise person once wrote: "You've got to make your own kind of music/Sing Your own special song/Make your own kind of music/Even if nobody else sings along"

The Jericho Harlot Q&A

Your name:
Jonny Burial.

Where are you from?
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

Name of band:
The Jericho Harlot.

Who else is in your band?
Brandon Gray and Mike Mulholland.

How would you describe yourselves?
We call ourselves a mix of Green Day, Alkaline Trio and the Foo Fighters. Mostly because that's who we have been compared too most often.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Get good music in the hands of  folks that can appreciate it! We are constantly creating, recording, and re-inventing everything we do. We just want people to appreciate it! And love what we love!

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Playing with Icon For Hire and Five Iron Frenzy in the same month was great! Huge fans of those bands. Sharing the stage as a professional, with bands you already love is the best part of this business.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
We played this "shall remain nameless" music festival in some field in Kentucky. It was like a commune. It was pretty rough.

Where can we listen to your music?
www.reverbnation.com/thejerichoharlot is the easiest place to listen for free. Or on Spotify, SoundCloud, etc.

Where can we find out more about your music?
