The Professor and Naomi Kay Q&A

Your name:
Wayne Cox.

Where are you from?
Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Name of band:
The Professor and Naomi Kay.

Who else is in your band?
Naomi Koit.

How would you describe yourselves?
Indie, retro rock/folk, pop.

Who are your main influences musically?
I grew up on Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Stones, Deep Purple, Rush etc, and played in cover bands doing everything.....Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple, ZZ Top. Started to write and record my own music and then only worked in bands recording and doing our own material. Played and toured extensively. Went back to school to do a Ph.D., and mostly got into progressive jazz and songwriting. Became a songwriter and session player writing and working for named signed bands (through my prior music connections), or to simply write and record for myself. Also got heavily into being a self-indulgent soloist/lead player influenced by many great shredders and progressive jazz players. Later influenced by the songwriting of bands like Coldplay, indie roots bands, and pop bands like Smash Mouth, etc. becoming obsessed with developing the ability to write simple melodic, catchy pop songs with staying power.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
At my age (early 50s), I am lucky to be working with a young and talented vocalist/violinist (Naomi Koit, 24). Her vocal abilities, playing and writing/co-writing abilities bring to me skills and interests that I just don’t have. She is, by far, the best vocalist and most professional player I have ever worked with – and I have worked with a lot of folks over the years. We seem to share a similar sense of what is good music, she brings in influences I don’t have, and my years of playing various styles, experiences and varied influences bring to her a lot that someone of her age hasn’t acquired (yet, at least). So it is a great combination, although distance and the fact that we are both extremely busy working professionals (I am professor of international relations, and she is a graduate student and has a career well under way) means that finding time to work on material and getting together to work is extremely difficult. We also live on different sides of the country. But our goals are similar.....to write and perform music that is good enough and will mean enough to our listeners that it will leave a legacy. For both of us, the creative side is the most important.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
There have been many for me. For the Professor and Naomi Kay, we instantly attracted the interest of some powerful players in the industry who went to bat for us. Indeed, we even got offers from major labels, but could not (or would not) end our existed professional working careers to dedicate ourselves to music/touring (i.e. unwilling to quite our day jobs under the promise that we ‘might’ hit it big – even with major label support). Knowing that we secured that sort if interest and got offers on the basis of nine rough homemade demos in this highly competitive and unpredictable industry was very reassuring to both of us. No regrets. Now, we are searching for ways to keep our primary careers, and yet still make some high quality recordings and put another album out that better reflects our full potential as both songwriters and players. We have made a bit of money, and are using my old music connections to get that done in the near future.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
There have also been many....too personal and depressing to share. Let`s just say, the music business can be nasty.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
For me, I Knew Everything is a good representation of our ability to make fun rocking tunes, and it displays Naomi’s skilled and infectious vocals. For her, I suspect that Was It Her is a good representation of her vocal prowess, emotion, writing, and violin playing.  Home is probably the best example of my writing and guitar playing style.

We are in the studio now, doing demo work for a proper recording session in San Jose with some guest artists and a great producer. Check out our various pages for updates and perhaps the pre-release of at least one or two new songs.

Dax Lion Q&A

Your name:
Dax Lion

Where are you from?
I was born in Kingston, Jamaica. More specifically in the St. Andrew Region in small area called "Maryland".

Who else is in your band?
Dax Lion is a performing artist not a band. However, we have worked with various bands/musicians for live performances. Bands we have worked on music with/performed live with include - Uprising Roots Band, Sin City Prophets, Artikal Band, Judah Tribe Band, One Drop Routz Band.

How would you describe yourself?
I describe my music as conscious. This sound is unique and natural, it is driven by the mystic of existence, nature and things we see, hear, touch and know we feel on a daily basis. I would describe myself as a rebel with a cause that forward with a message that even i myself have to take heed to and learn from it. Understand clearly what i am saying "even I have to learn from what i am saying" therefore the message that I am bringing is even more powerful than I that is singing it and is of paramount importance today and for the future to come. JAH Blessed.

Who are your main influences musically?
Main influences musically are Michael Jackson, The Marley Family, Buju Banton, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, amongst many others.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I hope to reach the people through music. I use it as my form of communication. I find I communicate best not when talking, but when singing/performing my arts. I hope this music will not hurt, but will inspire and uplift all positively. I just pray and hope that what I have envisioned will manifest because if it does, this music will inspire all of us, even those that think they cannot be inspired, to act and do something positive for someone, something, themselves and the Earth itself or just to feel good and sing along. Blessed.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
The highlight of my career so far to me is when my songs Gwan Natty, Mr Poverty and Last Child was being played on the number one reggae station in Jamaica, Irie FM. Popular radio personality Ron Muschette premiered the songs. Also just being able to perform on the International scene is great as well. I was just in Canada and did a show with Junior Reid as the headline and I did some earlier this year with Steel Pulse and Inner Circle as headline acts and I also did a short appearance at the Reggae in the Desert Festival in Nevada on Daniel Marley's set, its been great and I am grateful for these opportunities.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
I have no moments I want to forget really. I think in everything we learn from our mistakes and we all make mistakes from time to time, until we no longer make those mistakes again, so every moment happened for a reason to make us a stronger performer and singer.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
If I had to pick one song to represent my music I would open Pro Tools and merge all the tracks into one and bounce it as one long MP3 track. I think my music has evolved, evolves and is evolving still right now, if you listen from Gas Pon It to Reggae Jam Jam to Mr Poverty to The Prayer to Lyrics to Boom Draw, I think each track has a different feel/ emotions to it and different sounds to them, thus what I am trying to say is if all the tracks were on one MP3 as one track and you listened it from start to finish you would see that it represents my music entirely as it shows that my music is always evolving and I am experimenting with different sounds. It should be noted that reggae is my comfort zone so we always have reggae in the mix.

April Story Q&A

Your name:
April Story.

Where are you from?
I'm from Canada. I grew up in a small city called Kingston. But I've been based out of Toronto for the last two years, which is the biggest city in Canada.

How would you describe yourself?
I would describe my sound as pop/soul, with a relaxing atmosphere to it. My voice stands out sometimes just because it has a higher pitch.

Who are your main influences musically?
I grew up wanting to be just like Mariah Carey and practised with her music all the time, which is odd because I don't really think we have similar sounds. I've always been really into Motown as well. Now I listen to a bit of everything but I love British singers because they always seem to have something very unique about them.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I feel like I have seen too much bad in the world, so really my aim is to add as much good and create as much beauty as I possibly can.
I would like to create music that helps people escape and relax. I'm working on a new album now that will be more on the dreamy/ambient side but still have a pop/soul sound, so hopefully with this album I can achieve the right sound that people can escape to.
I also really want to use my music as a platform to do some good. I am going to pick a charity with each album and donate a portion of all sales to that charity. I would also really love to be able to organize events such as large fundraiser concerts, and get other musicians involved in the process as well.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Through sheer fluke, I've been fortunate enough to have been able to work with some of the people that I have always really looked up to in music. Those experiences have been amazing, but the moment I always think about is when a 10 year old girl from youtube told me that my music made her cry. Musicians work so hard to try to build their craft so to be able to reach anyone in that way is a huge deal for me. I have her message saved to my computer so I can read it when I have a bad day.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Probably just the times I have realized how ruthless and competitive the music industry can be, and how many egos there are. I think any business is like that though, so you just have to focus on the things you do like about the industry.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I guess it would be "I Don't Break" because I love the lyrics, and the iTunes sales from that song are going to breast cancer.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band/music that I forgot to ask?
Just that if anyone wants to say hello on Facebook, Twitter etc I'm always around! I read all my messages and I try to answer as many as I can so feel free to drop me a line anytime :)

Steven Jackson Q&A

Your name:
Steven Jackson.

Where are you from?
Originally Loughborough, Leicstershire, England, I now live in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Who else is in your band:
Just myself. Being a songwriter I have an idea of how to shape the songs, usually people are more than willing to help me realize that goal.

How would you describe yourself?
I am a singer/songwriter

Who are your main influences musically?
The Beatles, John Lennon, The Jam, Peter Gabriel, etc...Music that has a message and comes form the heart.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I like the idea of spreading the message,  I have something to say from the viewpoint of a middle-aged man whom has experienced a LOT.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Watching the birth of my son. It is life changing. Also seeing many loved ones pass away. These help to shape the person I am today. In terms of music having my music played on a regular basis on an Internet Radio Station, Splash Radio.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
I have no regrets, I am grateful for the mistakes I have made, I wouldn't be the person I am today without making them. Even playing to an empty room (and that has happened) can be a learning experience. I never want to stop learning.

If you had to choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why:
Can You Tell Me. Chris Duval on his radio show always states that this is his favourite of mine. So for that reason I pick it too.
I like the lyrics and the message to the song.
'Can You Tell Me' Music/Lyrics: Steven Jackson

Can you tell me what it is that is worth dieing for
Can you tell me why it is we have to go to war
Can you tell me why it is we pray to one above
Can you tell me why it is we hurt the ones we love.
I don't really have an answer to what I'm trying to say
These are thoughts stuck in my head that will not go away
But I resolve that I will not be led astray at all.

Can you tell me why we're bent on poisoning this world
Why we try to change the others who are different
Can you tell me as we make our way around the Sun
We think we're so important like we are the only ones.
I don't know what it is that I am trying to say
I just know that these are thoughts that will not go away
I get down on my knees and I start to pray to one above.

That this world can seem so horrible
That this world can seem so bad
That this world can make you happy
That this world can make you sad
But when you stop and think about it, is it really so bad at all.

Can you tell me how we measure a human life
Is it all we have to give and all we sacrifice
Can you tell me as we live our lives upon this world
Why so little makes sense why it is absurd.
I am sorry for all the bad things I've done in my life
I feel sorry for all the sad things all the pain and strife
I will really try to change and put it right, to put it right.

At the end of the day the Sun goes down upon us all
Are we the first to admit when we run and when we fall
At the end of the day when the colours fade to gray
As we slowly watch the people one by one they pass away.
Our tenure on this Earth is a temporary thing
Like two lives joined together by the passing of a ring
It's our indifference that surfaces that the years will surely bring
That makes me sad.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
My name is Steven Jackson, I am a Singer/Songwriter from Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
I have been writing songs for many years and I view the process as a Journey.
Songs are strange things, and in my case seem to perfectly catch a state of mind, or a series of thoughts, much like a photograph.
These are songs written about life as I see it, as simple or as complicated as it may be.
We are Passengers here on this Journey and our lives are fairly short in the grand scheme of things.
Love life, it is a gift, revel in just being alive and never be afraid to make mistakes,
We are all better for them for it makes us who we are.
"Up Above My Head
There is Blue Sky
Below my feet there is dark
Somewhere in the middle
There is me
Lost in thought".
