Belly Of Paris Q&A

Your name:
Daniel Cochran.

Where are you from?
Originally from the North East of England although I spent last year in Saudi Arabia and now live in Bahrain in the Middle East.

Name of band:
The Belly of Paris (I'm also the singer in UK art-rock band By Toutatis, who are on hiatus while I'm here).

Who else is in your band?
The Belly of Paris has managed to get musicians from all over the world. There are currently six of us: myself, guitarist Robert Prest (UK), organist and vocalist Yasmin Sharabi (US/Bahrain), drummer Sumit Sharma from India, Argentine bassist Carlos Villarroel and Szabolcs Nigo, a trumpeter and bassoon player from Hungary. Bahrain's a very small island so the musicians huddle together. It was easy to meet people.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?
Originally it wasn't a million miles away from the baroque art-rock stuff I was doing in the UK, but working with people from around the world changes the way things sound. We're recording our debut album at the moment and it's still got a smoky barfly element but is a bit more rhythmic and unusual.

Who are your main influences musically?
I come at it from a folky background, I started over here doing that kind of thing. Saltburn-by-the-Sea is where the old band were based so there's a maritime/folklore edge to it, but also PJ Harvey, Shilpa Ray (we play similar instruments so it has a bit of that in there), Tindersticks...etc. Plus the rest of the guys bring their own influences. Sumit was in a post-punk band, Szabi is more classical. It's an interesting mix.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We love to play, opportunities in the Middle East are limited so we aim to branch out to the UK and India from time to time. At the moment it's Bahrain, Dubai. The debut album is written and recording is under way; I'd like to see where it takes us.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We're just beginning but we had one of our songs featured on a BBC radio documentary recently. Before this band I had music featured in the Sound it Out documentary and at mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art). I've been lucky enough to play shows with a lot of my favourite artists: RM Hubbert, Eliza Carthy, Richard Dawson, The Lake Poets, but the topper was playing on the same stage as Public Enemy at a festival last summer.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Leaving the UK just as the By Toutatis debut album came out was a sterling piece of timing. We couldn't promote it properly and I felt really bad for the rest of the band. We managed to turn a profit for the label - a really cool independent called Tiny Lights, but it could've done a lot more I suppose. I wasn't really thinking clearly at the time.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
We've only released a couple as we're currently recording The Belly of Paris debut album. That's due in summer. That said There Was No Snake is a good early summation of what we do.

Debut album from art-rockers Casual Strangers

ART-rockers Casual Strangers are promoting their eponymous debut album.

The four-piece from Austin TX, have been in touch to tell RealSoundsOK: "Memory may recall the American guitar rock of the 90s, British dream rock of the 80s and acid-tinged Krautrock of the 70s, mixed with something light-hearted and new.

"Recorded live to tape in four days at the Bubble with producer Chris Frenchie Smith, the album conjures Austin's anything-goes Slacker heyday with bizarre spoken-word interludes, confusing sexual references and deep layers of synth and guitar.

"In a time of fragmented virtual reality and reduced privacy, free your mind with the psychedelics of Casual Strangers."

You can have a listen to what all that sounds like below and if you like what you hear, find out more at facebook.com/casualstrangers or casualstrangers.tumblr.com

Beau Austin Q&A

Your name:
Beau Austin.

Where are you from?
Los Angeles California, USA. Recently relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Who else is in your band?
Mostly just me as a solo act, however depending on the show and town I'm in that night a few may friends may join me.

How would you describe yourselves?
I like saying "poetry with a soundtrack" singer songwriter/ art rock style with punk rock roots.

Who are your main influences musically?
The Clash/Joe Strummer, Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, Les Paul, Leonard Cohen, The Ramones, Bob Dylan, Johnny Thunders.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Just to always be creating. I love painting, writing and playing guitar so I ultimately hope to be able to do so full time while discovering & promoting others in creative fields. I love nothing more than sharing my work or others with the world, there's always something for someone that will be a passion.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Just looking back on all my years touring in punk rock bands and making great records, it's absolutely a highlight seeing my progression as an artists and person, those first few years being dead broke, sleeping on floors, driving 18 hours between shows, etc and always smiling truly made me who I am today.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Of course.. Maybe haha.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Right now it would be "I adore" - it's autobiographical and really reflects I feel on how much the your mind will mess with you when you should just be happy and enjoying the moment, yet something that a lot of us deal with on a continuous basis with a variety of things.

Where can we listen to it?

Psylhouette Q&A

Your name:
I go by my producer name Shadowless Man on this one, sorry to be faceless.

Where are you from?
Brighton, UK.

Name of band:
Psylhouette probably a silent 'P', but say it if you want, I won't mind.

Who else is in your band?
This one is just me, I play all the instruments and handle all the production. Hopefully there'll be a live incarnation of the project soon featuring some other people. You'll quite often to see Psylhouette referred to with "us" and "they", it's just the way it is.

How would you describe yourselves?
This is a bit of an exploration, to see what comes out if I'm left to my own devices.

Who are your main influences musically?
For this project, I was looking to bands like Can, The Doors, Sigur Ros, Neu!, I doubt I got anywhere close, but it's only my first EP.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
The chance to get the time to develop artistically, that's so important. Few people get there straight away. I'm so fascinated and immersed in music, if anything I do can become a small part of someone else's musical experience, that would be amazing.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I've been lucky to work with some great people on some great projects over the years.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
There have been tough times, that's for sure, but I think most people who are involved with music sometimes wonder why they bother, but then can't seem to stop doing it.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
There's only four tracks in Psylhouette's catalogue so far, the title track off the new EP "In on the Outside" might be a good place to start, I've written a few tracks in 7/4, it's such a solid groove.

Where can we listen to it?
You can hear clips from all four tracks on the EP on Soundcloud, follow us too if you have an account  https://soundcloud.com/psylhouette/

Where can we find out more about your music?

Cordcalling Q&A

Your name:
Denise Conway.

Where are you from?
London, ON, Canada.

Name of band:
Cordcalling.

Who else is in your band?
Brian Conway (my husband).

How would you describe yourselves?
Art Rock - we are creative with a raw, minimalistic approach.

Who are your main influences musically?
The White Stripes, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We view music as a creative and expressive outlet. Besides the enjoyment that we receive from it, we hope to inspire people to seek after truth, love, and goodness.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
We performed at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, which was an honour since the festival is so renown and it included headliners such as Sloan and The Trews.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
When we tried to book our first gig, we didn't even have a copy of our music on CD, only on a cassette tape. The booker at the bar didn't have a tape player, so Brian had to drive home to get his walkman (lol). Although it was not the typical way to book a gig, it worked out and the show successful.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what
would it be and why?
"Wicked Desires" because it shows how much passion and power we can pack into a fairly simple tune. It is our single that radio stations have played the most. We also have an official video for it, which may be viewed on our Youtube page.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say about your band/music that I forgot to ask?

We are currently working on new songs for an analog recording, which will eventually be pressed onto a vinyl record. We plan to tour with our upcoming album in select cities in Ontario and venues in London, UK.

Darryl Starr.
Where are you from?
Birmingham, UK

Name of band:
Rebellious Jukebox.

Who else is in your band?
Simon Weaver and Carl Beuselink

How would you describe yourselves?
I would describe us as an alternative art rock band. We fuse together retro vibes with dirty urban beats, sleazy vocals and left field guitar hooks.

Who are your main influences musically?
Radiohead, Massive Attack, Unkle, David Bowie, The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zep. All the great British bands.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
£20million pounds each would be nice and seven Grammy's if you're asking.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
So far........sitting in the studio for the last three years producing our debut album.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Sitting in the studio for the last three years producing our album.

If you could choose one of your songs as an advert for your music, what would it be and why?
Probably Slave to Lust. Its dark dynamic sexy and as sleazy as fuck.
