Old English Q&A

Your name:
Matt Henderson

Where are you from?
Toronto, Canada.

Name of band:
Old English.

Who else is in your band?
We've got a bit of a rotating cast in this band with around 20 different contributors on record and at shows. But the main group includes Daniel Halyburton (guitar), Justin Taylor (bass), Thom Lesnick (drums), Jarrad Robinson (trombone), Adam Reid (trumpet) and Rob Fernandes (saxophone).

How would you describe yourselves?
I struggle with this question.  I'd say we're primarily a sort of indie electro-pop type band but we have lots of different elements like brit-rock, shoegaze and folk.

Who are your main influences musically?
Too many to list really!  But for this album we've just released I'd say Animal Collective, M83 and Blur were are big influences.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I'm not really sure that we have any sort of end goal in mind. I think we just want to make music that is big and unique and that we like. Sorry that's so vague. I do feel like a lot of bands have big career goals and everything they do, every note they play is scrutinized and judged based on whether or not it will help expand their audience, get them radio play, etc. which i feel would be suffocating. We've never had an agenda like that which has allowed us to be pretty adventurous in our songwriting and production and make the music that we want to make.  Sorry if that sounded pretentious...

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I think just getting this album done and released. We worked incredibly hard and long on it and we're so thrilled with the final result.  It's exciting to have people finally hearing it and liking it.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
That's a tough one too. We were supposed to have our big album release party a few weeks back but it just happened to be on the same day as the biggest blizzard we've had here in years, so we had to cancel it last minute, which was absolutely gutting.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Our sound is pretty varied so picking one is tough but I'd probably say Anchors. It sort of manages to capture our folky sensitive side as well as our louder electronic persona.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?
The whole album can be purchased here: http://oldenglishtheband.bandcamp.com

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
Not that I can think of! Thanks!
