Nikolas Kolya.
Where are you from?
London, UK.
Name of band:
Geeq.
Who is in your band?
At the moment the band is myself Nikolas Kolya on vocals and guitar,
drummer Steve Rooney and bass player Fabio Puglia.
How would you describe yourselves?
We're a rock/metal power-trio playing our own mix
of the eclectic and intense, melodic and dark, with at times a slightly unusual
approach to songs as we're all very well versed in playing many styles of
music, which means we tend to deliver a twist of the unexpected wrapped with an
aggressively, loving angle! We go from aggressive to quite sweet sounding,
maybe all in the same song - it's boring to play regular, expected, usual music
I think....
Who are your main influences musically?
Faith No More, Devin Townsend, Living Colour, Tomahawk, Porcupine Tree,
NiN, Frank Zappa, we were describe at one of our last gigs as "the bastard
love child of Fugazi meets the Beatles" but I don't agree, we're not as
sweet sounding as the Beatles and not as loose as Fugazi - I think we're more
the slut children of Mike Patton porking Frank Zappa while Devin Townsend
watches!!!
What do you hope to achieve in music?
To play great gigs, to write great songs and to give a great audience a
great show. Oh, and I hope to belt that midget Simon Cowell in the trap, now
THAT would be a great musical achievement.
What has been the highlight of your career so far, and
why?
Playing with quite simply so many great musicians as I have done. And also
mixing our Debut A Turquoise Clock with Cameron Craig (Queens Of The Stone Age,
Bjork, Placebo) and realising that we knew all the same people! That was a nice
moment - the music industry is a small world in London where the greats know
the smaller fish and both learn from each other. Very humbling.
And what’s the moment you want to forget?
I don't want to forget any musical experiences actually, even when things
go soooo wrong, they some how are also fun!!
If you could choose just one of your songs to represent
your music, what would it be and why?
The last song I've written! We're recording it in June for an EP, it's
called "It's just fantasy", all about a relationship that I'm still
in with a girl who lives in Holland with another guy, but she wants to be with
me here in London and it's just complicated! It's a kind of fantasy situation,
pure love, great times, lots of heart break, but it's kind of reality...but
also fantasy! It's a long song - 7+ minutes, and has a hooky chorus - I'm very
excited to record it.
If I was to choose off of our current album, I'd say The
Rope Of Death, our current single - it's dark and groovy, intense, sweet at
times, also ferocious at times with twisted lyrics and it's so much fun to play
live - this sums up the band in many ways. People can name their price and
download it here: http://geeqband.bandcamp.com/ track/the-rope-of-death
Where can we listen to it?
We have our music listen to and to buy here as download: http://geeqband.bandcamp.com
And here if people want the CD: http://geeq.bigcartel.com/ product/a-turquoise-clock
Where can we find out more about your music?
Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I
forgot to ask?
We usually try to suck eggs, but recently we've only managed to snort them
half way up our nostrils......! Steve our drummer is emigrating to New Zealand in June so we'll be having
a sayonara gig for him first weekend of June we think, come and see us suck
those eggs!!
