Have a laugh with Dan Latner

LIKE your folk/bluegrass music with a twist of humour? Then check out the new LP from Dan Latner.

No Fun Intended is the latest offering from the travel-happy Canadian and includes the tracks Northern Canada and Bored.

He told RealSoundsOK: "The album really snowballed accidentally into existence. In 2012 I received a writing grant for a comedy album and headed out to woodshed in Prince George, British Columbia, where a long-term girlfriend was living.

"We broke up two days into the visit (that's funny, right?) and then I moved to Sri Lanka where I wrote most of the songs. I've been bouncing around Asia and Africa ever since."

You can watch the video for Bored below and to find out more head to danlatner.ca

Robin Brock Q&A

Your name:
Robin Brock.

Where are you from?
British Columbia, Canada.

Name of band: (if applicable)

Who else is in your band?
I am currently looking for a band. Any ideas or suggestions? LOL

How would you describe yourselves and your music?
If Heart and Def Leppard were jammin’ on Kiss songs co-written with P!nk.

Who are your main influences musically?
My main influences are Kiss and Def Leppard. I love the attitude, the passion, the melody, the hooks and the riffs. Lately I’ve been hugely influenced by Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold. As for singers, Paul Stanley, Don Dokken, Joe Elliot, and Joe Lynn Turner have been huge influences in my style, as well as Pat Benatar.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
My aim is to get my music to people who are open for it. My lyrics are a bit dark and not for everyone, but they have a message. No victim songs here. I want to keep evolving as an artist, and a songwriter and write the best, most amazing songs I can. And rock the hell out of my listeners at the same time.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Highlight? Wow. So many amazing things. I’ve gotten to perform in many different places in the world, worked with some amazing musicians, had some amazing coverage in magazines, but what never ceases to amaze me is when people tell me I’ve touched them; my music has touched them in some way. Whether it’s a song that rocks or something deeper.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Hah. Lots of those too. Kidding. I don’t want to forget anything because all moments are lessons. Especially the ones you tend to want to forget. Those are the growth moments and as painful as they might be...they are our greatest teachers and those are the lessons that make me become a better writer and performer.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Master and Slave. It’s a fun song, it’s got a cool story, and it ROCKS! It’s such a blast to perform live.

Where can we listen to it?

Where can we find out more about your music?
My official website is robinbrock.com. You can find me on all the social networking sites. I’d love to connect with everyone reading this.

Anything else you’d like to say about your music that I forgot to ask?
I’m in the newest Issue 69 of the UK’s Fireworks Magazine. I’m also on the covermount and I’d love for you to check it out. I love connecting with my fans and am big on social networking, so stop by and connect with me. I’m also currently working on album #4. This new one is going to be my best hardest rocking album to date. I’m excited about it, so to keep updated, follow me on any of the social networks. And I often give out free stuff if you’re a follower too.

Latenite Automatic Q&A

Your name:
Jay Brown.

Where are you from?
Vancouver, BC Canada.

Name of band:
Latenite Automatic.

Who else is in your band?
It varies. I have a rotating roster of awesome producers and musicians who have contributed to the project such as Calgary-based producer Steve Rokosh, who I'm working with on the new Latenite album that will be released later this year called They Treated Us Like Animals And That's What We Became. Or Scott Whalen of the Vancouver band Ugly Men who played a significant role in past studio and live versions of Latneite. He played in the band and co-wrote songs our debut album called You Are Electric?, which we released in 2013. Steve Bays of the popular Canadian bands Hot Hot Heat, Mounties and Fur Trade remixed one of our tracks and Jason Corbett of the band Actors is producing a future record. It's exciting to think about who might contribute in the future.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?
Insomniacs in black jackets making a racket.

Who are your main influences musically?
It's weird, everyone compares our sound to NIN or Depeche Mode, which is an amazing compliment but my biggest influence is actually R.E.M..

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We want to Rock the Vote, high five Bowie, rock your hometown and play with Queens of the Stone Age. I hope that's not too much to ask.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Playing a benefit and raising money for Alberta Red Cross after my hometown of Calgary Alberta after it was hit with a brutal flood in 2013 was a highlight. Really any time we finish a new song and send it out into the world I feel like a proud and maybe slightly dysfunctional parent. I get excited by the small stuff. It's a highlight when we find a sick synth sound!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?I think the song Iceland Volcano off of our first album sums us up in a nice little three-minute package. It's got dirty synths, lots of harmonies, a nice build, big guitars and a weird but catchy chorus... that's basically us.

Where can we listen to it?
You can hear it here: https://soundcloud.com/latenite-automatic/iceland-volcano

Yeah, we want to tour the UK this year! Can we crash on your couch?

Dave Cormier Q&A

Your name:
Dave Cormier.

Where are you from?

Victoria, BC, Canada.

Who else is in your band?
My former guitarist Will Peters, Christian Stevenson bass, Darcy Phillips keyboards and Taylor Allum drums.

How would you describe yourselves and your music?
Straight up blues rock/rock band with a modern day sound.

Who are your main influences musically?
Just a mishmash of styles from Johnny Lee Hooker to The Faces, the Stones, the Clash, the Black Keys.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
I want to build a career of good quality listenable music. I'm more about the music less about the money or fame.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Being played on FM Radio stations across Canada. Never really thought that would happen.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
All the naysayers who said it would and could never happen! Took the fun out of it for a while.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
What's My Name is the song being played on the radio here right now. Songs are stories of the things I've seen and heard. Sometimes good things sometimes bad I have no real attachment to any song except for the moment in time they capture.

Songs come to me in dreams sometimes in the middle of the night or while daydreaming. They come fast and surprisingly complete. It's like a never ending radio always playing in my head.

The Written Years Q&A

Your name:
Wade Ouellet.

Where are you from?
Vancouver, British Columbia.

Name of band:
The Written Years.

Who else is in your band?
Kane Enders (drums) and Kodie Krogh (guitar, vocals).
I sing lead vocals, write the songs and play guitar.

How would you describe yourselves?
We like to describe ourselves as Winter Music. The record we wrote tends to channel the damp and dreary coastal winters while also highlighting the un-replicated beauty that can be seen at times throughout the season.

Who are your main influences musically?
My lyrics are influenced by John K Samson (Weakerthans), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Dan Smith (Listener), and Jordan Dreyer (La Dispute). The way those four artists tell stories and channel the experiences of people close to them or situations they are passionate about is extremely captivating. Apart from that, we collectively draw influence from other bands like The National, Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, and even Steve Earle for myself.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We just want to be able to do our thing for as many people as possible. It's not an easy time in music and it takes a lot of time, effort and money just to keep the train rolling. As long as we can keep supporting it then I'm happy.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Definitely the release of our first record and the release parties surrounding it. It was a pretty unbelievable feeling to have finally finished writing and recording the thing after six years, then to put it out there for people to hear was another whole new feeling. Have people know the songs, even in other cities, at the release shows was a pretty big shock to us.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Of course every band has their bad (or really bad) shows. I'm confident we've long moved past those as we've grown as musicians since first stepping into production almost a year ago. There is definitely one particular show we all choose to forget in the time before that.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
This is always a very hard decision as we like to try to span a pretty wide range across our songs sonically. I'm going to go with Homesick Dirge; we just did a video for it and it definitely the bar for my future writing, with it being the last song I wrote for the record. It's probably a little different than most of the other songs we've written so far but I think it's still a good representation of what we're about.

Where can we listen to it?
You can watch the video for it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoR9VtKtEIs

Anything else you’d like to say about your band/music that I forgot to ask?
We'll be playing a ton of shows over the next few months so keep an eye on us!

Within Striking Distance Q&A

Your name:
Stephen Foster.

Where are you from?
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Name of band:
Within Striking Distance.

Who else is in your band?
Lando Taves - Vocals
Ryan Frechette - Guitar
Warren Hayes - Drums
Myself - Bass

How would you describe yourselves?
We like to mix rock with hip hop, then we add a dash of blues and a hint of funk. Our fans have compared us to RHCP, STP, Rage Against The Machine, Pearl Jam ect.

Who are your main influences musically?
Lando - The Tragically Hip, Dave Mathews Band, Paul Simon, Keith Murray, Erik Sermon, Head Stones.
Ryan - Pearl Jam, Blues Traveller, Alice In Chains.
Warren Hayes - Korn, Lamb Of God, Slipknot
Stephen - Korn, Greenday, Metallica, Slipknot

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We want to write music that can entertain, inspire, touch hearts, boil your blood and make you dance all at the same time. Our number one goal is to keep our fans happy, because with out fans.... you are nothing as a musician.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Our up coming western Canada tour. The reason why I say this and not something that has already happened because, we are touring with King Doom ft Chris Vrenna (the former drummer for: Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson) and many other great and talented musicians under the HMP Recording Label. Also there is going to be a TV crew there filming the whole tour for an upcoming reality TV show. Its an amazing opportunity for a band that has been together for less then two years.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
At one of our last shows we decided to work with a promoter for the first time, so we show up to the venue and the place is beginning to fill up. The first act was a guy and a girl doing an acoustic duet set, they were incredible. So we expected the rest of the acts to blow us away. The next opener was another solo acoustic act, Buddy called him self 'The Rock and Roll Bob Dylan'. this guy was horrendous, I have never seen EVERYONE in a venue get up and leave all at the same time like that before. He was so awful that the sound man left during his second song and never came back. When we took the stage there was less then 20 people left in the venue. That is one show we wish we could forget.

If you could choose just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Our next single called Believe. This tune is D-E-A-D-L-Y! It is full of attitude, energy and passion. It truly is ROCK at its finest!  We will be heading into the studio in a couple weeks to record it, so expect to hear it in the beginning of June 2013.

Where can we listen to it?
We have a few songs on there including our single Living in a Shadow.

Where can we find out more about your music?
@wsdrocks (twitter)

Anything else you’d like to say about your band that I forgot to ask?
We would like to thank you, Greg, for interviewing us. We would also like to thank our fans and all our future fans, for all the support they have shown us, and continue to show us. If you the reader have any questions for us or if you want to book us, send us an email at withinstrikingdistance@gmail.com we look forward to talking to you all.
