The Cherry Bluestorms Q&A

Your name:
Glen Laughlin.

Where are you from?
Los Angeles.

Name of band:
The Cherry Bluestorms.

Who else is in your band?
Deborah Gee and Mark Francis White.

How would you describe yourselves?
We’re what I call a psych-Mod band, which means we’re basically late 1960s British Pop influenced, with the psych element deriving from Syd Barrett rather than Jerry Garcia.

Who are your main influences musically?
We each have varied influences. The ones that are most relevant to this band are a lot of the classic 1960s bands such as The Beatles and The Small Faces, but also some ‘90s bands such as The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Supergrass and the like.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Our primary aim has always been to make albums that we enjoy and esteem as much as we do our favourite albums by other artists. Once we do our best to achieve that, we hope to turn as many people on to our music as possible, whether via recordings, live shows, videos or other media.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I think releasing our concept album Bad Penny Opera represents our highest artistic achievement. The reviews of the album have been almost universally phenomenal. We’re especially happy that many of the reviewers really seemed to understand the concept and what we tried to convey. Of course, we’re hoping that our next album will represent a new high water mark for us.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
But you're asking me to remember! Okay, I'll play! Really there are two. We played a show in an old hotel in Downtown LA. that was acoustically the worst space any of us had ever played. The promoter was new at booking shows, the club owner was new in the space and the sound engineer was actually mixing from behind the stage! On top of that we nearly got in a fight with one of the other artists! The other was our second trip to England. I got Bell's Palsy just before we left, so half my face was paralyzed and my left ear was really messed up. Then Deborah's back went out. I had to take her to hospital in Liverpool. When we got back to the flat we hired in London after a gig, we couldn't get the door unlocked for two hours while a drunken Frenchwoman harangued us in the street!

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I think As Above So Below is a reasonably representative song. I frankly think I have better lyrics than that, but the main guitar riff is very emblematic of my style and it features Deborah and me singing parallel harmonies as we often do.

Where can we find out more about your music?

Anything else you’d like to say that I forgot to ask?
I'd love to let your readers know that we are working on our first vinyl single, See No Evil. It should be out soon. We'll have another album out next year. Lastly, we'd love to hear directly from fans at our website www.thecherrybluestorms.com. If you sign up on the mailing list, there's a free download of an exclusive track. Or, you can visit us on Facebook.  Cheers!

David Woodcock's Relatively Single Man

SINGER-songwriter David Woodcock will release his track Relatively Single Man on November 10th via Blow Up Records.

The single - taken from his self-titled album - follows the release of Open Secret, Same Things and Beggars Can't Be Choosers.

David's lyrics are typically British, filled with humour and wry observations and the artist has been described by BBC 6Music's Steve Lamacq as "an Essex Jarvis Cocker".

And better still, he comes from RealSoundsOK's home town of Southend on Sea!

You can listen to some of his previous tracks below and for more on David visit davidwoodcockmusic.com

Around Town Q&A

Your name:
Lawrence Bray.

Where are you from?
Bromley, UK.

Name of band:
Around Town.

Who else is in your band?
Liam on bass, Matt on lead and Oli on Drums. I play rhythm.

How would you describe yourselves?
Fun, outgoing, full of energy but at the same time keeping it cool.

Who are your main influences musically?
Think Beatles, Oasis, Stereophonics - Think MOD/Britpop. We're flying the flag for British guitar based music. It's the interaction of the four of us jamming and coming up with new songs and a vision of using old school recording techniques using vintage equipment to get that organic vibe

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Everything our idols did.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Well it’s pretty special being played on BBC Radio. We’ve been played three times by Gary Crowley, who we have a lot of respect for as he was one of the forerunning DJs for Britpop alongside Jo Whiley so it’s always great to hear him introducing our song.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Haha I don’t think we have any yet…maybe failing to get hold of one of the dancers in our video which is soon to be released haha.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Well at the moment we only have one song out at the moment so I guess it’ll have to be ‘Out of Control’…regardless of any others we may know about that aren’t out yet ‘Out of Control’ is still a tune!!  We've just finished the follow up called "15 seconds of fame" which is all about the reality TV, X Factor ethos of here today, gone tomorrow success. We are looking at playing the long game. Other tracks we're working on towards an album include Shangri La and Rock Chick

The Byzantines Q&A

Courtesy of Jennifer Sando
Band name:
The Byzantines.

Where are you from?
Adelaide, Australia.

Who is in your band?
Michael Pietrafesa - Vox
Rhys Overall- Guitar - Synth
Jose Moucho - Bass
David Zammit - Guitar
Johnny Zervas - Drums

How would you describe yourselves?
Our style is electronic rock with a strong British flavour. It’s reminiscent of the late 80s early 90s Manchester scene, combining elements of indie/psych/electronic music.

Who are your main influences musically?
Primal Scream, Kasabian, The Stone Roses.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Just make great music that people will (hopefully) dig for years to come. In saying, if we happen to get the opportunity to tour the world doing it, we wouldn’t be complaining, haha.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Although it technically hasn’t happened yet, our European/UK tour (in September this year) will definitely be the highlight. I feel it’ll be a great learning experience, plus it’ll be our first time as a touring band. That’ll be interesting.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Surprisingly, none. I’ll let you know after the European tour haha.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
I guess it would have to be ‘Cats Got Boots’. It’s got a little bit of everything in it. Sums up the approach we generally take to writing music (especially that EP).

How would you describe yourselves?
We're a band influenced by the best in British rock n roll, focusing on standout guitar riffs and catchy lyrics.

I'd say the bands that really influence our sound has to be The Rolling Stones, Oasis, The Beatles and Kasabian.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
I'd say it has to be hearing our demo's for the first time. The feedback we've got from them as been great. We've also managed to get some big gigs booked off of the back of them.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
I don't think there's any moment as of yet we'd like to forget. Obviously mistakes will happen but you've just got to power through them.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
For me it would be Alive, I just think it's a real upbeat song and people can relate to the lyrics. It's just a nice feel good tune.

LunchBand Q&A

Band name:
LunchBand.

Where are you from?
Based in and around London with roots in the West and East Midlands.

Who is in the band?
Tom Cale – Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar
Josh Jackson – Lead Guitar & Vocals
James Mulligan – Bass Guitar & Vocals
Leigh Laniyan – Keyboard, Percussion & Vocals
Kodi Bramble - Drums

How would you describe yourselves?
Five handsome gents crafting original soundtracks to midday treats. British indie cinematic pop which blends 60’s sounds with 90’s heart. Love songs with sickly sweet catchy as heck melodies. You’ll be cursing our name after the fifth day of humming.

Who are your main influences musically?
Each member brings a different interest to the sound, from indie beach pop to the most progressive techy metal so we find a blend that encompasses the elements that keep us interested in own sound.
Some bands that float our boat: Why?, Animal Collective, Pink Floyd, Wilco, the Shins, Everything Everything, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Death Cab for Cutie, the Flaming Lips, Incubus, Jeff Buckley, the Magnetic Fields, Battles, Leonard Cohen, Sigur Ros, and Wild Beasts.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
We want to make as many people move their feet, and we’ll bring the noise if you bring the feet.

What has been the highlight of your career so far, and why?
Our launch night for our second EP was pretty exciting. We put on quite a shindig at the Good Ship in Kilburn. We invited along some bands we love, and packed the place to the rafters. The promise of balloons and tunes brought people flocking. We’ve been expanding the elements to the live show and each one has a life of its own. It's where we thrive.

And what’s the moment you want to forget?
Not so much a moment to forget but certainly the low point. Just after our last string of shows at the end of last year our old drummer decided he wanted out. Needless to say it was a huge blow for us and a set back that derailed us for a while. We tried a few drummers on to find the one that fitted and gosh darn it, if we didn’t find just the perfect size in Mr Bramble.

If you had to pick just one of your songs to represent your music, what would it be and why?
We pride ourselves on each song showcasing a different side of the band and each new song takes on a new evolution in the sound, so right now I’d say the two new tracks we’ve just released live video versions from our rehearsal space.
Lemonade is our short, sharp snapshot of our indie pop sound D.M.T. is a full out psychedelic love song romp.

Ligers debut video for Goodbye

LONDON-based Ligers have released the first video from their double A-side single Break You/Goodbye out next Monday.

Both songs showcase Ligers' alternative-pop sound with Break You the more upbeat of the two. The video for Goodbye is above.

Lead vocalist Liz Stott has a signature style, telling her not-so-rose-tinted stories in an uplifting way against the vocal harmonies of the rest of the band.

The four-piece, who used to be known as ‘Liz and The Ligers’, have already seen a good amount of support from the UK music scene, including Tom Robinson at BBC 6 Music and John Kennedy at XFM.

With the new name and new members, the band is now pushing forward - with a slot at this year's Benicassim, Spain, also on the horizon.

New track from Superfood

THIS is the new track from Birmingham act Superfood.

Described as being in the same bracket as Supergrass and Blur, the band has just played three gigs in Brighton as part of The Great Escape.
