Tingle In The Netherlands Q&A

Your name:
Tingle In The Netherlands.

Where are you from?
Currently Manchester, UK, though Owen was born and grew up in Belgium to British parents. Helên is from the northwest UK.

Who is in your band:
Just us two - Helên Thomas and Owen J.

How would you describe yourselves?
Helên: Wonky synthpop with dark / comic/ surreal lyrics. We've been described as 'cheeky synth' which I like and also 'Like Depeche Mode but with a sense of humour' though I imagine that the DM lads like a good laugh as much as we do...
Owen: Absurdist and eclectic synth pop. Not famous enough.

Who are your main influences musically?
Owen: Chris And Cosey, Throbbing Gristle, Danielle Dax, Liaisons Dangereuses, Tuxedomoon, DAF, Can, Abba, Giorgio Moroder, YMO, Japan, David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Aphex Twin, early Human League, early Depeche Mode, Momus, Dome, John Foxx, Coil, Klaus Nomi, The Residents, Yazoo, Elli Et Jacno, Fad Gadget. To name but a few.
Helên: The Muppets, Stone Roses, The Shamen (circa 1988 before they were shit), New Order
(all that classic Manc indie stuff to be honest), Shed Seven, Pet Shop Boys, Leftfield, The Beloved, The The (best band ever), The Specials / Fun Boy Three, Pulp, James Last, Mike Flowers Pops and all of the music that my Mum used to listen to that seeped into me by osmosis... hence our track 'She's No Lady' being inspired by 'Dude Looks Like A Lady' by Aerosmith. To name a few.

What do you hope to achieve in music?
Owen: We're only into left-field experimental music for the money.
Helên: I just want to have diva strops and write songs for Tom Jones.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Owen: I couldn't name a specific gleaming pinnacle for me it's the ongoing satisfaction of creating my best work with my partner.
Helên: Finishing our album and sitting and listening to it in full and thinking 'this is quite good actually'.

And what's the moment you'd rather forget?Owen: The last time I looked at our royalties statement from our distributor. Stop file-sharing and support the artists you shit heads.
HelênEvery time someone asks for a radio edit a small part of me dies.

If you could choose just one song to represent your music, what would it be and why?
Owen: Not sure if I could choose one song , maybe She's No Lady as it's a good example of how we work together. Helên devised a vocal melody for a poem that she'd written over a rough musical sketch that I'd done, then I took that and made a track out of it. And I think it's one of our
stronger tracks.

Where can we listen to it?

  1. Many thanks for this. It's very much appreciated especially seeing as we're so dull. ; )
